61-2080 – Pima Air & Space Museum, adjacent to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, in Tucson, Arizona. It was the last B-58 to be delivered.[88]

I'll have to go by and see if it's still there.

I haven't been for a couple of years. It's an all day adventure -and then some.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pima_Air_%26_Space_Museum

My father was in an Ordnance Disposal outfit in the Air Force, and would deploy to any accident (which were infrequent).

He was off a lot on TDY, generally for training. Early on, when I was still a kid, there was an annual outfit picnic at his work site and everyone could see the neat weapons and bombs they were tasked with de-activating. Sadly,, it didn't last.

Security was so relaxed in those days. I would frequently ride my bike onto the base (Norton AFB) to use the swimming pool, waving to the guard as I entered.
I could ride all over the base, and no one looked twice at me.
The cavernous warehouses were never locked, I would ride my bike around inside, and dumpster diving always brought up wondrous treasures.

Norton was not a strategic facility, but a logistics and military transport command that also hosted a wide variety of outfits like my father's.
Norton had an airport that looked very much like an early civilian airport.
When I was 16,, our entire family, ten of us, flew directly to Guam
(well, not directly. We flew on a DC6, I remember stops in Hawaii and Wake Island to refuel. It was a long flight)

Sadly, they shut Norton down, mostly due to its proximity to LAX and Ontario International.

When we returned from Guam after a couple of years, my father's outfit had moved to Camarillo,,
a goodly distance to commute, but it was a week on,, week off duty,, and my father really liked that week off.

I had flown to Hawaii from Guam and entered the army at Hickam AFB. There I found out how one NCO always looks out for another, and my reruiter was immediately on the phone to my father, assuring him that he would find something special for me.

So I would up with a slot in the Army Security Agency,, and after basic training with my "All Hawaii Company " at Fort Ord,
I was assigned to the next door Army Language School at Monterrey for a year's Russian study.

More of a campus than a military facility,, we had 3 hours of class in the morning, a two hour lunch, and three hours in the afternoon.
Monterrey was an hour's walk down the hill, and there were no fences.
There was a 6 AM reveille , but that was a motley assembly, and if you overslept,, someone would come looking for you, rather than report you.
We were hosted by a holding company, who fed us, provided the other wherewithal like medical and transport,, the all important mail,
and who hated our guts and called us "Monterey Marys".

Cannery Row was still canning something,, and I bought a 1950 Ford with no starter for $50
There was always someone around to give me a push if I couldn't find a slope to park on.

I like my snow like what we had in Tucson last week. *

A beautiful 3 inches blanketing everything. The kids were enchanted.
Many of the younger ones had probably not seen snow.

    * It was gone by noon

Like those Indians rebuilding car batteries in their "homes".

You basically melt the lead to burn off all the impurities (sulfate), recast the plates in molds, and put it all back in the old battery case

    I'd hate to live next door . . . . or ustairs.

I wonder if he piped in external air for his wood stove ?

It seems like it should be warmer in there.

Not using external air for combustion pulls in the frigid outside air through any small crack.
And adds a lot of moisture to the air.

    A bit safer too.

"Would you like to spend the weekend at my underground Siberian cabin ?"

    "I don't know you very well . . . . ."

"You can leave anytime you want"

I always wondered what the pods were for too,, assumed they were some sort of fairing.
We've all watched the flaps extend (and extend and extend) on a landing,, but I haven't paid any attention on takeoff.

But what I'm most curious about is where I can pick up a shirt like he's wearing.
The accent would be helpful too,, but I don't think I'm willing to make that much of a commitment.

    So,, the Dachshund says

"The Beer belongs to my Lord" !

I can vouch for the fact that the Germans take their beer very seriously.

I had a office type job there in the early 60's with every weekend free, and traveled extensively on a Vespa around the countryside.
(Although I was technically in the Army).

The beer was not pasteurized then,, every small "dorf" had their own beer, and it was all good. And cheap.

Unfortunately, the different yeasts changed the flora of my colon, and a mild diarrhea was my constant companion.

    How to deal with it??
Well,, the only reasonable place to find some needed facility was the ubiquitous Gasthaus,, where I would relieve my discomfort,,
and have another beer (or two).

Unfortunately,, the weekend saw a full Gasthaus,, and I would often be caught up in the gaiety,, requiring a call:

"Murph, I may be in a few minutes late tomorrow. I'm still in Limburg"
"Goddammit, Shepard,, we talked about this"

Germans are fond of Apfelwoi, apple wine, that gets harder as the fall progresses.
It's drunk in smokey, noisy cellars, and creates some hallucinatory intoxication: your head kind of detaches from your body and floats above you

It's consumed with smaltzbrot,, pumpernickel bread smeared with lard,, probably to coat your stomach so can consume more.
    Disgusting stuff.

Everybody sang,, (all Germans love to sing) it started small
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xe7mRV0S-0

And always wound up with the raunchy song about Adele

There were a thousand verses, one nastier than the other,,
    >>>> and this was before feminists so the women were the loudest.

    The song starts out,,

    I loved once a maiden,, the entire world had ****** her;
    She had a big *****
    Her name was Adele.

The song went downhill from there, examining in minute detail Adele's physicality, preferences, tendencies,

But each verse always ending with,

Adele, Adele,, du bist una dufta frau
(Adele you are a wonderful woman)

Listen carefully to the first two lines, and you will hear
