The last of the equipment arrives today - Time to start brewing - First one for us will be a Single Malt and Single Hop (SMaSH) Once I get a few of those under our belt we will move to more complex brews.

How is the cost of brewing your own compared to buying ? Beer has gotten so expensive.
    I remember when I was a kid we bought Brew 102 for $4 /case.

I was big for my age and had a fake draft card, so I didn't have to chip in.

Glory days, in the wink of a young girl's eye

Up here a lawnmower beer (4% generic) is $45 a case of 24 - A beer you would serve your friends is $50 to $60

A brew your own batch of lawnmower beer is about $18 (Including propane) for 20L or about $9 a case or $0.45 a pint.

Now you do have to write down the $700 of equipment I needed to buy, so the first batch will be $17.50 a pint, but will decline over time to 8.75 , $5.80, 4.73, etc until we get to batch #14 where it is close to a $1.25.

Butter has always been expensive in Nicaragua.
I remember 115 in La Colonia.

I did a comparison a few years back of basic foodstuffs ,, prices in Nicaragua and the US.
I don't remember anything cheaper in Nicaragua. Sugar, flour, rice,, beans,, were all higher in Nicaragua.

Beef might have been a bit less, but back then the Nicaraguan beef was tasty but very chewy.
Pork from the US can be bought in PriceSmart for less than pork in the markets in Nicaragua.

Chicken used to be reasonable,, but it has really gone up in price.

One big difference here is,, you can watch the sales offers and stock up.
I bought butter recently for $1.47 /lb. Sams Club has it for $3 /lb in four pound packages.
We consume a lot of sharp cheddar cheese, always stock up on this product when we visit PriceSmart
PriceSmart also has milk in bottles.

For some reason milk keeps better here (US).
    I can buy a month's worth on special for $1.27 /half gallon.
By the time I've worked my way through the milk,, it's on sale again.

There are bargains in Nicaragua: vehicle insurance is a fraction of the US,, your registration is good forever,, and rents are much less.

Labor is by far the best bargain.
Edgar is happy with the $10 /day he gets,, and he hires casual labor when he needs it for $7

Tobacco has sucked up a lot o casual labor around Estelí and Condega, but it pays less,,
and it's a long day with the commute on the bus.

    Hobbit Enterprises Ltd

Off the subject a bit,, but buying a new car battery a couple of days ago I was surprised to see a 30% increase in the price over two years ago.

I'll have to check in with Will and see where Lithium Ion prices are trending.

One odd thing I noticed is,, we had a substantial spike in gasoline prices,, but I didn't see a corresponding increase in diesel.
The price for regular increased overnight 25 cents /gallon.

I do find myself purchasing more and more online. Black licorice at Sprouts is $7.65 /lb, but $5 from Amazon.
Basics that would be picked up at Walmart, Costco, or Sam's I can get as cheaply delivered.

Amazon has a "daily deal" that can offer significant savings:
    I picked up a 16 TB external for $229

The in store shopping experience has gone the way of the airlines.
It used to be enjoyable to fly.
    Now it's a chore.

Both Sam's and Walmart have a hybrid experience that works well if you know what you need.
Order online,, drive to the store, park at a designated spot,, send them a text, and your order is brought out to you.
Arizona allows you to keep a firearm in your glove box; and many do.

Eventually,, I imagine,, you will be able to interactively walk the aisles of the store.
Using a wide screen, like your TV, it would be almost like being there without the danger of being mugged or car jacked in the parking lot.

Not sure if this one is geolocked or not

It the last Budd car route in Ontario between Sudbury and White River which happens 3x a week. It is a flag stop railway so you can pop on or pop off at any time.
