We met Jenny's new arrivals. I have been conscripted to move a gifted queen sized bed from the donor to their new apartment via our utility trailer.

All 3 are sisters and Chilo actually went to school with their mother.

We still have above zero here, but those times are coming to an end with just above freezing forecast for early next week .

Will there be anyone left in Nicaragua when this is all over ???
This is the time to leave, if one is so inclined.
There is still time until the new congressional members are seated.
Biden will still have his veto,, but no money.

After January of 2023 the planets will no longer be aligned.
This was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Not to worry, the Repub's will issue special emergency Mozo visas for their friends in agriculture.

A co-worker is here from Japan for 4 days. Been working with him for 20 yrs now - For lunch we went to the Crusty old Serbian hot dog vendor I had mentioned in the past. The Hot dog guy told us this is his last week this year - Friday the last day. Dec 4 he hops a plane to Cuba to live in the Sun, cheap beer and pretty girls until mid March - Room is $15/day.

Started the long whittle down of "things" - Managed to sell 5 tire rims from assorted projects where they accumulated over the past couple years - Now old short wave radios - Decommissioned test equipment, some LCD monitors and a mish mash of things going up for sale - Buck here - 2 bucks there 200 and so on - I have 40 yrs of projects that worked, some that did not, that need to go to free up space if we choose to start renting out parts of the house.

I still have two crates of tools to go to Nicaragua but no one is shipping - To much stickey fingers from Aduna, Diesel to high (To truck from TO to Miami) and to be brutally frank - They guy makes 2X the money in the building boom framing than wunning around collecting boxes for shipping like he did when he was dry walling...

Anyways - Now that 30 yrs at the mother corp has passed, 35 yrs since graduation, 44 yrs since my first CPP (US equiv to SS) payment was made, a paid house, 3 kids to adulthood and (what the advisor tells us) enough savings, an 80% completed house in the tropics, and a wife who is not looking to have me knocked off by a hit man (or that is my hope) it is now time to move in to semi retirement mode.....

A little peace is starting to settled in...

So today was the first snow stick day - Ground was peppered with whiteness and did not melt until noon.

The rest of next week is a few deg below freezing every night and one or two deg above through the day. Winter is probably here to stay until March now.

Chilo has been working a Saturday/Sunday job since August. 1 to 5 each day. It is a grocery store, caring for the entrance of the store (Carts, sweeping, mopping, trash collection etc etc) Each day she comes home with food destined for the dumpster - Mostly just lais out on the lunch room table and very little is close to expire. Today was 8 yoghurt where the cardboard holder was torn. Coffee pods, fruits and vegies.

The passport office called again - They told chilo that her passport is waiting on a $45 lost passport fee - They said they would call her back for details this week.

With the time change it is now dark at 6 and loosing a good 4 min a day - In a month and a week it will be dark at a quarter to 5.

Chilo is hearing rumors that uncle Sandi is passing a "law" that gives the goverment authority to sieize property that is titled to someone who is out of the country more than 24 months?

Has anyone else heard the same?

Probably another of those chisme rounds.

Maybe related to that or not but two of my neighbors, both "pastors" had been trying to collect signatures for a letter from them to petition the local alcade to seize my farm and re-distribute it to them on the basis that I'm a foreigner and I don't live there full time. Even though I'm not the actual owner. Nothing ever came of it to my knowledge.

It seems like they had something like that during the revolution.

The law might still be on the books.

We finall got Maria's passport figured out - It seems like the passport office did not collect the $45 lost fee - Even though we did pay a lost fee with Maria's temporary passport, it is just too much hassle to argue.

Fee had to be _faxed_ in via a printed and signed form - Leading edge they are

Interesting little thing transpiring in Mexico I seen going by this week. It looks they (Mexico) has raised the income requirements for residents from $1700USD/Mo to $2400 - 2700US/mo. This could lead to a bump, or possibly a rush, of people who now are on the wrong side of the scale going to Nicaragua - Time will tell.

You could say the housing frenzy has come to an end up here. One house on our street has been up for 2 months now with no sale - A couple co-workers tell me the similar scenarios in their neigbourhoods.

One Co-worker even appears not to be able to get a renewal in their current house. The rules (Since 2020 I think) state you have to qualify at 2% above your current rate (And up here your mortgage can not be more that 32% of your validated gross) With rates at 5.95% that means you would have to qualify @7.95 - If you are holding a 600K to 700K mortgage (Which many co-workers do) that is a swift kick in the nuts to renewals.

Anyways - Once Chilo gets her passport we will make a trip to the Excited States of America for a bit of shopping and a 3 yr delayed visit to harbour freight and probably a pop into Home Depot for some Ryobi battery tools you can not get here...

Another Bingo completed - Our Lions club participates in 2 Bingos. One is a TV based Bingo which is held weekly and one is an inperson Bingo.

For the TV bingo we just have one member drive cards and picks up cash.

For the inspersion is where our club does one shift a month. There are 4 shifts every day of the month. We het a cut of the proceeds which is currently approx 400 to 700 a month depending on proceeds. Before the Pandemic we were getting 700 to 1200 a month. That goes a long way to funding Guide dogs and other community based needs (Glasses, Diabetes tools like testers, wheelchairs the odd lift and bathroom refits)

At the TV bingo is Tim - I would peg Tim in the mid to high 40's and got to talking to him last night as the 50 or so Bingo parishioners Dab'd away on their papers. Tim grew up only a couple KW from our house and actually started in Bingo as a by product of his father volunteering for another charity Bingo. Now he has been a full time Bingo runner (A paid position with the hall owner who is under government lottery contract) for almost 22 yrs now. He never really had another calling through high school and just fell into the job and liked it. Simple man with simple needs .

It looks like the halls are starting to hurt for volunteers (other service clubs, Bands, swim and other orginations with a charitable number) to help as the older members die off. Our club has lost 5 members in the last 4 yrs (Art, Wendy, Mary Anne, David, and Ken) and have not returned to our 2010 peak of 19 members.

Feb will mark myself as 20 yrs a member - My Dad has been a Lions member for almost 55 yrs now.

Public service appears to becoming a lost art.

The Drive down south appears to be slipping - The Red truck is just not up to snuff and with day light availability and days above zero slipping away, it looks like we may just fly anyways.

That way also I can devote more time to a Nicaragua "Work from home experiment in that" 7 weeks to see if it is actually viable as a "plan" . The GM for the facility did a presentation to the Campus (I did not watch it) stating that their biggest challenge for 2023 is talent retention - there was a 15% turnover in 2022 (so far) and only 1/2 of those people have been replaced, let alone trained.

So this is the story so far - Chilo's oldest Brother, Edward. He lives at the north end of Reparto Schik IIUC. He has a house (well part owner of a house) two doors down from the house he lives comonlaw.

Gertrude (Guess at spelling) his Common-law wife, owns the house Edward lives. Gertrude's convinced Edward to rent the house to her sister - Gertrudes's sister moved in and did not pay for 7 months. She then got a job in CR and left. Edward then rented the house to another lady for $200 /mo and she has been paying . Now Gertrudes sister is coming back and she is pressuring Edward to kick out the paying renter and put her sister back in that house........ ANYWAYS... It we in this discussion where Edward was talking to a lawyer, that that lawyer mentioned the new law / or regulation.

It is meant as a low cost way to take from dissenters and give to loyalists. True or not I do not know, but that is the story

Daniel seems to be determined to incorporate the Cuba model before he dies.

In Cuba much of the housing stock is controlled by the Communist party.
You are assigned a house based on who you are.

And what the party giveth,, the party can taketh away.

I imagine a lot has changed since I was there.
It wasn't a bad life,, the lower class paid nothing for the house, nothing for water and electricity (although what you could plug in was limited).
You had a ration card that got you enough to survive,, if not prosper. At the time everyone earned about $50, but only $12 of that was in convertible pesos (dollar equivalent).

I had quite a few interesting adventures,, partly centered around two sisters who shared a house and raised their children communally.
Everyone is watched by those committees that Rosario tried to set up in Nicaragua.
Every block has a committee chairman, who is responsible for the loyalty of the people who live on his block.
When I walked back to the sisters' house after a night at the "disco, for lack of a better word",,
I would walk on the other side of the street,, and 100 feet behind the sisters.

One of the things I mentioned before is,, you could always tell someone who had family in the US and was sending remesas.
They had some meat on their bones. The Cubans living on the Cuban economy were all skinny.

Still, I did not sense any real hunger or poverty.
    And education was a priority.
A waiter in one of the restaurants would have a couple of years of post secondary education, and speak a couple of languages.

Anyone who has a chance should visit Cuba.
Cubans love Americans,, if you speak the language it's easy to establish meaningful relationships.

So,, Daniel has his work cut out for him. Nicaragua is very different from Cuba.
But he seems determined to move in that direction.

So here it is, the night Chocolatito fights - I see a good hour ahead of me looking for the PPV channel on our IPVTV - Right now Box Nation is on from the UK - I am almost positive the fight will not be on that channel. I am watching the Ottawa Senators vs the San Jose Sharks on my IPTV and that TV will become the search platform after that game is done.

It looks like two of the 3 families Jenny brought up has their work permit and surprise surprise - They are working - You can honistly fall down here and get a job, and a job a good 2 to 3 bucks an hour over minimun (Minimum $15.25 and almost everyone starts at $18 and change, and up to 20 with a little effort)

From what I Understand not a one of their children have made Ontario equivalent grading.

Middle boy (Willy) has finally decided on what he wants to do - Millwright. The Millwright course at the community college has no waiting list to get in and every_single_graduate of the course for the last 3 yrs has found a $40/hr job. Right now he is working at a donut shop - the same donut shop he was working at before the Pandemic - and making far more money. I think this is his 6th year there - He started part time while in high School. Just this week the ownership changed though and he is not as thrilled with the new owners and he was with the past one. THe past owner treated him really well with bonuses and how hte tips were split. Funfact - The owner had two shops (and Willy worked at both) the other shop is where I picked up the news paper that had the classified ad that I replied to for the job at the Mother Corp back in Sept 1990 - That was a long time ago.

Youngest (Kevin) is still doing Kitchen duty at that fancy Golf club, but interest in the food service industry is fading with him as well. He has expressed an interest in the Fabrication course at a school in Hamilton (The town where I was born, my Mom still lives in and I refer to as the Hammer from time to time) . It sounds like a cool course. The curriculum is welding and machining and the end job would be that an Engineer brings him a drawing saying "Build this" and he cuts, mills, welds and assembles the widget. ust like the Millwright course for Willy people are begging for graduates and there is no wafting list to get in.

Chilo's passport is all clear with respect to payment, or at least that is what the CC statement says, but it has yet to show up - I really am looking forward to that trip to Harbor Freight - Almost taking religious undertones :-)

Miami is still on, but in the Toyota, not the Hyundai - Really interested in visiting Little Nicaragua.

So he lost - <shrug> too bad

So Chilo was talking on the phone before the fight and I found out some new details and they were expanded upon after the call

So there are actually 4 families up now _and_ one more that left Nov 5

The one that has been here the longest and is living with Jenny, they have the work permit. The husband tried it (work), but work is not for him . It was in a chicken processing plant north of town. They have also seemed to fallen into the welfare trap and go shopping the day after the check, picking up $50 jeans and fancy shoes and hats. Now they do go to the food bank and bring Jenny more food (Jenny goes there as well) and say "Hey we brought a bunch of food!" That is such a Nica sentence to me -

Jenny does that us all the time (for the last 4 years) bringing us the food bank stuff she does not like, and then hits (me) up to fix a phone, reset lap top or run an errand. Just like a leader we know who says "Here enjoy this bridge I gave you" with "Donated by Japan" all over it

Then there are the two families that arrived in the summer, they have there permit and all adults are working. They have their own apartments also.

The one that I did not know about (family #4) is all settled in an apartment and should be getting their permits within a week. They already have jobs set up as soon as the paper clears.

From what I have seen/read it takes about 2 years to process the deadbeats so family #1 still has 18 months to shape up, or to make plans to set up in the states.

Family #5 should be here in the next week to 10 days.
