Looks like there's too much freedom goin' on in Nicaragua, gotta nip it in the bud. The translation is an image file because La Prensa won't allow copy/paste of their articles.

So if they don't like you they can confiscate your stuff.

When you boil it down I think that is the biggest interpretational misunderstanding culture wise.

Your (the individual) and yours (the collective)

They always could take your stuff (Look at Cohn's land up by Leon and Rosario Acres outside of Managua) this law is probably a way to just make it more expedient ..

Well yeah, anyone can take anyone’s stuff. But having a law and cultural prejudice on your side helps.

Any government can and does confiscate private property when it is deemed to be for the common good, usually for public use. The Eminent Domain laws. It almost sounds communistic, or at least, socialistic in scope, but it has been used quite commonly in the USA, like when the interstate highway system modernized the country, or when local governments wish to create parks or protect community watersheds. Today it is much less commonly used because mega-property owners have the wealth to tie it up in courts and the politicians who might make such a law are often beholding to them.

"Possession is nine-tenths of the law," they say. But ownership is the supreme law where private property is sacrosanct. In today's world, where wealth begets more wealth and avarice is unbounded, landlords can own much more than they will ever be able to possess. And this trend continues to its natural extreme: to the point where most citizens become renters and wage-slaves, and the very water they drink and the air they would breathe are owned/controlled by others, not their 'government'.

Foreigners and expats who receive outside money in Nicaragua see Ortega's new laws as unfair. I see them as attempts to protect all Nicas in this poor country, not just Sandinistas, not just his government, from unfair exploitation by the uber-wealthy raiders from abroad.

ED isn't confiscation, you're supposed to get fair market value for what was ED'd. I don't think the Putin Law pays anyone a dime, it's meant to be punishment.

"The action of taking or seizing someone's property with authority" is the definition of confiscation. There's no 'seller' in an ED 'transaction'. The fact that there's any compensation at all differentiates the seizure from "forfeiture," such as when law enforcement agencies seize property from people convicted of drug trafficking and/or money laundering and it's done without compensation to the owner. For an eminent domain seizure, the gov't says what's a 'fair market' price.

The proposed law regarding "foreign agents" in Nicaragua is being modeled after the one already on the books in the USA.

There was a farmer out by Belleville (Across the river from NY state on the St Lawrence) who's family had a land grant from Queen Victoria's age or before when the province of Ontario , nor even the dominion of Canada existed.

It was from the 1790 or 1810 or so I think. Their land was taken and the words Eminent Domain were used, interchanged with expropriation IIRC . Can't find the piece - It was 6 or yrs ago) but made the national news as it was the last existing pre Canada tract of land in the province at teh time, or so it was reported.

I still believe that DOS could pull a new Pinata - Happened before, no reason he would not do so again.

===Edit=== Could have not been Queen Vic as she was not born yet

If rumor be true,, Ortega has so much Venezuelan Cooperation money tucked away that it's not money that is the issue.

His stepdaughter would like another bite at him.

Some of the people who were injured in 2018,, ditto.

He needs to die in the job to stay safe.

He probably looks to the experiences of Somoza and Pinochet, and sees his future if he lets go of the reigns.

Ortega is not dumb enough to have left it in Bolivars. Or Cuban National Pesos. Or Iranian Rials.

    NOBODY is that dumb.

I gotta say though,, the Nicaraguan Cordoba is really hanging in there.
La Prensa reports that the BCN has actually improved their foreign reserve position.

The cordoba was 34.60 this morning.
It was 16 when I first came to Nicaragua.

I suspect that with the recent experiences in Libya, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan,, Venezuela, people are taking a longer view towards regime replacement when no credible opposition is present. Less throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Hate to see that shit, as that type of thieving is a self propagating type deal. Once it starts it keeps rolling until something halts it, and it ain't usually the conscience of the thieves. The Goddam Nazi's were the biggest organized thieves the world has ever seen, all under a political and racial auspice. Nicaragua is a poor ass country and those with means are always fighting themselves for more and fighting the underclass to keep them from getting any. Ortega just wears the underclass jersey and speaks the lingo, no different than others that ride waves of populism.

When Shit hit the fan in 2018 you saw tons of the Poor Campo Believers heading out to Squat on Rich Landowners places, they thought it was going to be another free for all and had heard all the stories from the 80s where a dipshit who could not grow a Marigold could become a large landowner overnight, Thanks to Daniel & Co.

Daniel is not the typical Dictator that Rapes his Country & Hauls Ass, he is special, he wants to die in "His" land, and it may all be his by then.

If power passes down from Him to the Familia, the only way they can keep the masses happy is give them shit, that shit is likely to be Mine, other Gringos, and Rich Nicas, sure will not be anything with the Ortega name or eye on it..

As the Aggie says, once this shit starts, it is hard to stop..

Ortega always wanted to turn Nicaragua into another Cuba.

It looks like he might succeed this time.
