Gabriel Chamorro García, Gabriel Adolfo Chamorro Hurtado, Eduardo Mora and Ike Craig, posing with their 365 pound Marlin, which they won the "VII Torneo Internacional de Pesca Flor de Caña 2008" with. This competition took place on December 5 and 6 at the "Marina Puesta del Sol", in Aserraderos, Chinandega.

This just in from our friends at Surfari Charters who just got back from competing in this year's 7 annual Toyota Cup by Flor De Cana fishing tournament in Chinandega, Nicaragua. Once again, the Surfari boys killed it - proving that a 22' panga can not only compete with a $5mm fishing boat - IT CAN DOMINATE!!!

I'm always amazed how many fish can fit on this little boat! This LOAD of nice Dorados kept on coming out like clowns out of a Volkswagon.


For their efforsts, Surfari Charters took third place overall out of 28 boats in the 7th annual Toyota Cup sponsored by Flor de Caña. The second day of the tourney they had the highest overall score with two Sailfish and a Marlin release with tag! We finished third behind the Xta-Sea and the Rum Runner.

The biggest kicker is that if they had paid the extra $500 entry (they paid $500, but to be eligible for the Toyota Cup and the Toyota Yaris car, you had to pay another $500 for a total entry of $1000) they would have won the Toyota Cup, the entire tournament, and drove home a brand new car!!! Oh well, hindsight is 20/20, they kicked ass and still won $2,000, a case of Flor de Caña 18 year rum, a Blackberry, a Penn International rod and reel, and a big ass trophy!!!!! Not bad for a little panga!!

Congrats you guys! You crushed it again!

The Texas Rangers Big leaguer Vicente Padilla fishes that tournament every year,his boat's name: "El Latigo" the Whip .
He says he named it after his 95+ MPH fastball,that often times whips hitters .

What a difference 13 years makes. After the 60 min show on Nica last night I was looking for an article about the fishing tournament that we won while fishing with the Chamorros. Tres Frijoles had posted about this on this thread about a year before I joined this site. Everyone in that picture has had to flee Nicaragua. Juan Sebastian Chamorrow took the picture in that article as well and fished with us too.

And just to clarify, Josh was mistaken about this. To win the car, and over all tournament, you had to weigh in a Marlin. Weighing in a Marlin counted for 4X or so points by the weight of the fish. We had tagged a few sails and such, but we caught and landed the only legal marlin that year. It was the first year that the Pellas's didn't win, or somebody fishing with them, the tournament.

It's a changing world we live in, and it's not changing for the better.

A few years back you could use dollars everywhere in México.
Now, none of the Pemex stations will take them; Walmart won't take them, and Oxxo doesn't take them anymore either.

It's 3AM and I'm sitting in front of an ATM waiting for it to open . It closed at 11:30 PM. I need pesos for the toll booths.
A lot take plastic, but not all, and none take dollars.

It used to be so easy: make a small purchase in dollars , your change came back in pesos.

You used to be able to travel with a fist full of dollars, argue with the gas station attendant about the exchange rate. Whatever you bought you got peso change.

On the other hand, ATMs abound, every dirtwater tiene has one. Almost all the Pemex stations take plastic.

I also watched the 60 Minutes opening spot on the Ortega dictatorship. It's producers are still fighting the last century's cold war, highlighting DOS' ties to Russia. Today it's China's in-roads to Nicaragua and the rest of Latin America that should concern them. The Canal con was just the opening gambit.

Although the US State Dep't is still imposing sanctions on Nica baddies, the current political regime controlling America is going full-throttle toward authoritarian Marxism with pointless vaccine mandates while opening the border to the poor, proletariat masses and encouraging ever greater dependence on China for production of equipment for our wind & solar energy needs as oil, gas & coal become outlawed. In light of these changes, Ortega can expect to get a pass, as long as the Biden regime remains in power.

I suspect but don't know that it is more of a money laundering thing. And if you can't spend your dollars, no pne will take them. Cuba was like that 15 Yeats ago. No body wanted dollars. You couldn't spend them.

Nicaragua is a little different than Syria, Venezuela, Cuba,, in that Ortega is in bad health and probably not long for the world.

Rosario is not well liked, but clearly would like to be Predident. These recent events may be all about her.

From the sound of this article from last year, laundering dollars for Mexican cartels is a Chinese controlled business. Their dirty dollars don't enter Mexico.

I have little doubt that the Chinese already have extensive control over many of the political & power bases in the ol' USA. But not complete control. Mandarin is not mandated in public schools, yet.

the US Dollar is widely accepted across Mexico especially in the more touristic places. In fact most tour companies, restaurants, and even some shops will have their prices in both pesos and dollars.

Pirate, you may have to take off your eye patch and buy a Hawaiian shirt to pass as a turista.
