On my recent visit to Nica last week, after about a 1.5 year abscence, I noticed the Mi Gallo Mas Gallo signs around MGA and Leon. My Spanish is very poor, so my literal translation of the sign was the chicken.... more chicken. I thought the cock on the sign was the Tip Top chicken on steroids... so it kinda made sense. I was satisified with my own translation, until as events ended up, we went shopping at Mi Gallo Mas Gallo.... and it's actually a furniture store!
I finally broke down and asked my wife (Nica Chica) to translate the sign for me. I told her what I thought it said, and she corrected me by saying it's an expression. She says it's an expression, the rooster the most rooster or the most powerful rooster. To which I understand it to similar to the American expression, cock of the walk or the big man on campus - or some similar expression. After getting over my initial disappointment that I wasn't going to be getting to eat more fried chicken , I went inside the big man's store with my SIL and wife to look at the furniture.
We bought some furniture and had it loaded into our pick up truck (the big guy doesn't deliver the goods). I tied the stuff down onto the bed of the truck; however, the SIL was not impressed with my securing skills. Apparently my Nica "guy skills" are not up to par, as my wife told me her sister said she wished her husband were here. To compensate, the self-proclaimed professional rope tier for the furniture store came out and re-tied the stuff. Still not happy we had to pull over to a ferreteria and buy some more rope. After being tied with enough rope to hold Tropi gas King-Kong gorilla, the furntiure arrived safely to Las Penitas.
