    That is what you have to do here, prop the up on something to keep them from staying wet. I collect all kinds of junk that I use under them. Hardest thing here is that if the rains hit at the wrong time they burst. I get a few though.

    I made some wire mesh spacers (see pic) that I put under each melon. Since the spacer holds the melon above the soil, the water runs off, allowing the fruit to dry. Junk and rocks would work as well, as long as water doesn't puddle under the melon. I had some melons split from the rain last August. Just lucky though, they were ripe and we were able to eat them.
