    Where were you at?

To escape midday heat in León, jodido, I used to string my hammock under a couple of leafy shade trees in the small park near where I live. Few people loitered there during the day. (Come nightime, lovers fill the benches.) I'd bring a book and inevitably doze off. No more. While lightly sleeping, a diminuative shoe-shine boy crawled under me (I saw him through the webbing, but was more than half-asleep) and stole my sandals. Walking home barefoot on noon asphalt was the penance I paid for my stupidity.
