I am a lover of books, read anything I can get my hands on. Never done the Sci Fi stuff. For many years I lived in New Orleans off and on, had a place in the French Quarter. Came to know a bartender, Robert Asprin. Knew him several years before I ever figured out who he was.

Sebastian doing roof work

by MizBrown on 08-29-2014 at 03:05 PM

Taken with a Sony A6000 and a 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor lens.

The news was mostly good -- the rafters are old growth canela and still sound. The dry wood termites are in the ceiling framing over the bedroom where pine was used. The rest of the ceiling framing in the two front rooms are aluminum. So, the

Credit Cards and getting Amazon and other shipments here

by MizBrown on 08-22-2014 at 12:13 PM
One of the newbies in the Facebook group, Expats in Nicaragua, gave more bad advice on Amazon and shipping to Nicaragua.

Most of the books they carry can be sent here if your credit card has a Nicaraguan address. Declining to send to a Nicaraguan address when the CC address is in the US is a safety measure on the part of either your bank (most likely) or Amazon or the shipper. It's an extremely sensible restriction. If people who want to use a reshipper and keep the address in the

Correos -- so, far, it's just worked.

by MizBrown on 08-21-2014 at 06:06 PM

My Sony battery charger arrived today without problems. This is one of a number of packages I've received here that weren't stolen, lost or mutilated. People might have different experiences with big city post offices, like Philadelphia (postal employee hoarded two years worth of mail, a check lost when mail was

Expat 101

by MizBrown on 08-15-2014 at 05:11 PM
Sometimes, the expats groups are an echo chamber of misinformation heard from various people who didn't find the Nicaraguans quite as flexible at meeting their needs as they'd hoped.

I can believe that two individuals I've either met in person or who I've followed on this site for four years have had problems with Aduana or Correos or the USPS. Given that I had all packages go missing my first year in NYC, my money wouldn't necessarily be on the Nicaraguans in the chain being the

My House in Jinotega

by MizBrown on 08-09-2014 at 01:49 PM
Well, I had been planning to spend some of my inheritance on a trip to Europe, but my landlord wants to sell the house I've been renting for over a year in April and so any other big expenditures are out for the duration. We've discussed this several times in the past. I rented with the understanding that I'd have first refusal of it; we discussed the buying price about eight months ago when I got some of the payouts from the estate; and both of us have been back and forth on this. He's a good
