    Default Septic tank rebuild

The house we're staying in has its sewer line empty into a small tank, where the sludge seems to treat itself briefly before passing into the city sewer main. The house was built in the 1960s, by what I've been told, and the tank (bricks and mortar) has started to fall apart. The house is slap up against the sidewalk, and the tank is below the sidewalk.

Saturday afternoon, I went with Tio Jose to start buying materials to fix it. We went to three or four ferreterias and bought a length of 4" PVC pipe (it's stamped as 4", but the outside diameter measures 4 41/2" , plus it's gray, not white. No matter, it seems to match the existing pipe) for C$90, 50 bricks for C$2 each, and ten buckets of builder sand for C$9 each. The sand is dirty volcanic sand full of stones, hardly "clean builder sand" like you'd buy in the US. They shoveled the sand into a bucket and dumped it in the truck bed.

Most of the ferreterias were closed by 4pm, when we were shopping, so we couldn't buy the two bags of cement (C$175 per bag). They were closed Sunday too, so we'll go today (Monday) after Tio Jose returns from slaughtering a cow who broke her leg at the farm .

This morning, my wife called ENACAL to come "pump" out the tank. They arrived within about an hour with four workers. Of course, they don't "pump" out tanks, they shovel out the crap. I was surprised to see what looked like cloth in there, which everyone claimed was toilet paper. I still don't believe toilet paper can survive intact like that. When they'd dug down to where it was liquid, they borrowed the old plastic bowl the maid uses to wash clothes, and scooped out the rest of the crap.

When they finished, they covered the hole with scraps of paneling and tree branches for safety.

"White House Pizza. El circulo que unida la familia."

Thus barks out the portavoz at 6am, accompanied by a short snip of Vicente Fernandez music.

Today, some different workers, a man and a boy of about 8 to 10 years, are getting ready to brick up a new "box."

Here is the domestic water supply pipe, cleverly ducted within the stormwater outflow pipe. . That's how it was before, and it's too difficult to change it. At least the pressure differential favors the clean side.

The box measures about 27" square, by a little deeper.

The vertical pipes are bollards, Nica style. 4" pipe (4 1/2" O.D.) with a 2" steel pipe inside, to be filled with concrete and embedded in a concrete footing like a fence post. It's to discourage people from parking vehicles on the (yet to be cast out of concrete) cover plate.

I'll have to remind them of that.

Reminds me of when my wife dropped some food on the floor and, in accordance with the five second rule, snatched it up and popped it in her mouth. Noting the appalled expression on my face, she said, "The maid just cleaned the floor." I said, "Would you like her to wash the dishes with the mop, then?" Though my point was made, her behavior failed to change.
