About twice a year these things show up here. I buy them from the neighbor kids and pour gasoline on them and toss a match. These things make me CRAZY.

I saw/heard some kids with them a few years ago in Nic. They referred to them as "traca-tracas" (sp?).

Of course, I had to try them out to see if I could still make them work. I did (for a short while) and, of course I whacked the crap out of my wrist with them very shortly thereafter.

I agree these are something from the past that should stay in the past.

Again I must applaud you señor Cox. Your entry into her life must have been, for her, God-sent. To be able to help so many, her brothers & sisters, and I'd guess more, there are always more, has undoubtably made a huge difference in their lives. God bless, sir.

We had clackers when I was a kid. There was a rumor that if they hit each other too hard they would explode and the shards could put your eye out. That kinda put a damper on it for us.

Been having problems here in the rental house in Granada with the AC unit in the bedroom. I didn't have time to take a pic as he was leaving but the technician drove off on his motorcycle with his tool pack in his lap and a 6 foot step ladder over his shoulder. The bottom of the ladder could not have been more than a 6 inches off the ground and I was thinking that if it slipped down a bit while he was moving it would probably, from impact with the ground, tear his shoulder and arm off and maybe even his head.

But, in typical Nica style, I am sure he made it home ok.

You of course know that there are certain things that go with the culture?

Culture? I have already learned the "culture." When i go to the pulperia, I keep my elbows up and scream what I want from 10 ft. away, I have developed my "crazy gringo" personna so my neighbors keep their distance, and I contribute to Jesse"s family every month. So much for "culture." To keep up with the political end, whenever I see the local CPC knucklehead, I sing " Give peace a Chance" to him. It seems to crack up any of the locals who happen to be around.

I first came to Granada in November of 2004. Got married here in 2006 and lived here for about 2 years straight and have been back and forth several times since getting a visa for my wife. We have been here since December 1 this year.

Some changes I have noticed over the years:

The Calzada street! What a great area it is now. It comes alive at night with people and street entertainers with music, juggling, dancing cultural displays. In 2004, it was just another street with a couple of hospedajes and a bar or two.
There are a ton more hotels (of various sizes and prices) and hospedajes. They seemed to have sprung up everywhere.
There are a ton more foreigners and not all are gringos!
There is more of a police presence in town.
It is safer now. In 2005 and 2005, I often saw rock and bottle throwing battles between different gangs in town.
Beggars ask for much more money now. 1 cord was the norm for years and now I hear them ask for 1 to 20 dollars!
There is very good cell service (none in 2004) and wireless internet. Consequently, there are much fewer internet cafes now. There is also satellite tv available.
More people are smoking. This surprised me but at least in Granada it seems more people have money and it also seems that smoking is a way of telling everyone that you are doing well financially! (At least for a Nica)
Supermarket product availability is much better and there is a Colonia as well as the Pali.
There is a Radioshack even though the prices suck due to import tariffs and IVA!
There are several more swimming pools available for exercise. There was only the pool at Casa Vivaldi where you could swim laps.
The roads are in much better shape now. The new road from Granada to Managua and especially the road from Granada to Nandaime and Diriomo. The buses used to have to slalom around all the potholes and spent more time driving on the berm than on the road!

There are probably more things that I haven't thought of so feel free to add yours!

Hey Big Jonh, is there such a thing of putting a "Like" button on comments?

I find that many times others take the words right out of my mouth and rather than being able to give them an "Attaboy" I hace to go way to the bottom of the post and I think there is something lost by doing it...

    JMO is all...

Hell and even a "Dislike" button, I might even score high on that one....

A button would be nice, too. I know folks who would give that one a lot of use!

And I know blame well, (Least I think I do) as the one say's YES WE CAN!

Oh come on LCT. Don´t be such a party pooper.

Nobody said the ¨Like¨ button actually had to do anything. It would merely serve as a pacifier for those with a FB mentality. Its kinda like the pedestrian button at a street corner. Those things are there just to keep the impatient occupied!
