On 22 March the Catalina touched down at Ras Ash Shaykh Humayd on the headland dividing the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba facing Tyran Island. The aircraft was anchored close to the shore and the crew slept on board that night. The following day, the family group were attacked from the headland by gun-toting Saudi Arabian Bedouins. Although the family and camera crew made it back to the Catalina, the aircraft sustained damage from several hundred bullets and had to be abandoned. The Kendalls and party were arrested and held a few days on suspicion of being Israelis. N5593V was too badly damaged to be salvaged and remained at the site, where it is still a graffiti-covered desert landmark.

    What kind of insecticide? "Thread-B-Gone"?

Someone should have salvaged the PBY years ago. I would have turned it into a monument. Create a replica beach, and put this in the center as a monument to all the Don Quixotes of the world following their dreams to their bitter and premature ends.

It was 1960, when a fairly ordinary man could still make something of himself, save up enough money to buy two war surplus combat aircraft and take his family on a trip around the world. It was still the era of "if you can dream it, you can do it." JFK, Ike, America was still on top.

How prophetic that the dream was crushed by ignorant, hate-filled rag-heads.

I've been trying to find a way to download the story from Life Magazine, but Google Books made it impossible. You have to go online there and read it.

Hint - it reads like one of your sea stories. I guarantee you will enjoy it. It will make your blood boil, and activate your spirit of adventure.
