    Default Little Corn in General

My friend and I are planning a trip to Little Corn in August. We plan on hiring a guide to take us out for a day, but were hoping to do a some DIY fishing in the flats by ourselves. I'm planning on taking a flyrod and an inshore spinning reel. What else should I bring, and what should I expect? I've done a lot of research on fishing their (and read though the entire fishing forum on here), but I've read varying reports. Some people say there are no flats and others say the island is surrounded by them. How many flats are their around the island, and are they accessible without a boat? Thanks!

On a side note, we're super excited to visit.

Welcome, and as far as I know being a novice to the light tackle fighting with fish, I would also bring something a bit heavy for the action.

Marlies and LCT will come on directly as they have a more local knowledge than I.

Both are how should I say Fisherpeople (one male and one female)

Not to forget Cookshow and Papatara that are long time residents as well.

Me I just figure a way to take them all being a Commercial Fisherman. But it don't happen, the suckers reproduce just too much. Like rats...

    Even a lowly Jack Cravel.

You butter fly that fighting sucker and roast it over fruit wood or coals and you have something fit to eat after a vicious fight.

A few cold beers with friends and sides to go with it, Oh Man I am getting hungry now.....

Light tackle ain't gone get him, you gone have to have something heavy to deal with him....

My Son had a fight off the Islands and nearly snatched his sorry little A$$ in the Sea.

This is a Cobia and nearly pulled him in the Sea, that one went into the Galley at home.

Heavy hand line boated him. I am so proud, he fought and won the battle alone.

I am not an avid fisher person myself, however the last time I was on the big island, the guys in the room next to me were avid fishermen. The had all kinds of rods and reels and tried for days to catch good fish from the shore with little success. They went out in a boat with locals who gave them hand lines and caught a huge amount of fish. They were stunned at the fact that the hand line was superior to their poles. I have also witnessed locals fishing from the rocks/shore in front of our property with handlines. They always are successful in what seems to me to be a short amount of time. You'll notice John Wayne states that his son caught the fish with a hand line. Seems weird, but it is true. I know I have bought one for my next trip!!
It's all part of the adventure!!

Day light come and me wanna go home.

I am so happy right now I could just %hit.

My wife is leaving Belize on Sunday to come HOME. I often said I didn't want her back but I eat my words. 15 years and three children is nothing to just throw out the window. till now she cries, she misses her children. Sometimes we all need a break I guess....

I wish her well on her journey.

One thing I have learned in life is if there is truly love and not abuse, how can one not forgive transgressions?

I am in anticipation of her return.

What do you do when you get lonely, and there is no one by your side? (Layla, Eric Clapton)

I don't give a $hit a dog or a cat ain't gone do it. Pets mean not a $hit to me. Humans do.

Sorry I went off in outer space, this is my Son hand lining off the Islands in the night.

His mother was against the trip, but she did break down at my insistence and custom fitted the PFD (Personal Flotation Device) from an adults life jacket.

Thank You all, I have no more sexual connotations of being the big Macho Man, but I do want to converse with someone I have deep relations of a mental state with.

I know it might be hard for some younger ones to understand but sometimes just a short time of cuddling is quite full filling the need to remain in a State of sanity.

And then I am going to kick her A$$ out to her own bed and roll around like the Mule I am in my own bed alone....

I do not want to hear any complaints of tossing and turning in the night....

It depends what you are used to. Having formerly worked as an outfitter for a saltwater flyfishing company, escorting groups to international fishing destinations, I can tell you that the flats around the Corn Islands are small and not very productive. There is a decent, turtle-grass flat on Big Corn by the former Anastasia's Hotel/Bar (now closed). You might see an errant tailing permit or multiple micro-permit and bonefish there. I am not as familiar with Little Corn but have walked around the entire island several times. There are patchy areas of turtle grass and marl. No flyfisherman has ever boasted about the quality of the flats fishing on either island but it is worthwhile to take an 8 weight to play around with.

    Fishing on Littlle Corn...

There are really no flats around the island like you may be used to in Florida or the Bahamas, so stalking from a boat would not make sense. However fishing from the shore for bonefish can be good or bad. They are usually there to be had. I have caught them using spinning equipment and jigs from shore on the North East end of the island just west of Dereks Place. My son has caught them off of Casa Iguana and I talked to a guy who fly fished for them with success off of the East side north of Elsas.

My brother fished from the beach at night between Farm Peace and Love and Dereks after leaving some chum out for a while and caught a huge snapper with a large spinning outfit and cut bait.

A guy named Alphonso can take you offshore for trolling with ballyhoo but he does not know what he is doing and his equipment is horrible. He can put you on plenty of yellowtail snapper, but then they are everywhere offshore.

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.
