Golf in or around Managua

OK, I have a friend who is considerably older and has been an avid golfer for many years. He has traveled with us for the past several years on our annual visit to Nicaragua. Very likely, this year will be one of his last (Frog spare life), so we are hoping that we can find some place around Managua where he can play a round this year.

I have heard of the Nejapa Country Club and that may be an option, but does anyone here know about it? Can you rent clubs? What does a round cost? Is it open to the public?

I'm not a golfer myself, but I'd whack a few balls with him if we can find the time to get away and let him play for a morning/afternoon (or however long it takes).

I also heard there is supposed to be a new course that opened near SJdS that was supposed to be designed by Jack Nicholas, but that might be too far for a day trip. We'll be there in October, so I am just exploring my options at this time.

I believe there are courses in Managua but I have not played there. The Iguana Resort has a nice course that is not too expensive if you use someones membership card or stay there. You can google for more info, here are a couple of pics from my visits

Thanks Dan, I'll check it out. Where is the Iguana Resort relative to the south side of Managua? We will be staying just off Car Vieja a Leon, just past where it splits off from Car Sur.

You can play at Nejapa as a non member but I am not sure of the rates. As an invited guests, the cost is around C$800 cords or $40 thereabouts. Course is beuatiful and in immaculate shape.
Iguan is located on the south end of the Country in Tola, Rivas to be exact. About 20 or 30 Kms off the panamerican Hwy. I played there once and the cost was $50 per round including the cart. They only have 9 holes that you play twice.

Thanks. Sounds like Iguana might be a bit far for us to get to and back from where we're staying so Nejapa might be a better bet.

I just "googled" Nejapa Country Club, and if Google's location is right, it is somewhat south of the airport - although I know that is a relative term. That is on the opposite side of Managua from where we will be, but still closer than Rivas. We would have to rely on a friend in country to get us there, if she knows the way.

I found the Nejapa Golf and Country Club website http://www.nejapagolfandcountryclub.com/ . Unfortunately, we woudn't be "invited guests" as we don't know any members. They do have a contact link, so I think I'll shoot them an e-mail about playing there. I appreciate the info.

They were financed with 306 tourism tax exemptions. Thus open to the public in the most restrictive sense. I know for a fact that guests at the Intecontinental Managua can play for just greens fees and caddies. I think the Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn Express have the same deal. I also believe that Gran Pacifica has opened up nine holes Like Playa Iguana.

I've been researching Golf for the last six months in Nicaragua. Here is what I have found that is available.

Starting North and moving south...

Monticristo is building a Mike Young designed course however it has yet to be started or completed as far as I know.

Grand Pacifica has 9 holes playable and is adding in another 18..however, kinda confused on the layout..and prices.

Wyndham Marianna just broke ground and a Jack Nicholas signature course is going to be built.

Guacalito is mega rich resort and the Pellas Group is putting in a course see more info. http://guacalitodelaisla.wordpress.com/

Iguana is a 9 hole course and I haven't heard much about it. I did see it with my husband 6 years ago when it was under construction. Husband said it looked "OK" and he's the golf expert (PGA Pro)
