My big dog is Rottweiller/German Shepard. Great with kids, hard on the Rockman.

You might want to look at crosses from the local strains of German Shepard Dogs -- they're not the same strains as in the US, lighter bodies and better legs and back. GSDs are apparently a breed that people respect -- easy to find here, too (couple in my neighborhood).

    Friends here have this cross:

I think she's chow/GSD cross and they got her locally.

I am guessing you will be needing a dog(s) to guard your property. I have some experience in this and can tell you some of the problems you will be facing.

Going to take a minimum of a year to get a dog from puppy to serious protector. Myself I think the puppy route is the way to go, the dog will always look up to you. My big dog will not let the smaller dogs get near me, he is boss of them, and he knows I am boss to him.

Cross (mean) dogs are always easy to find, people want rid of them, they are older and set in their ways, you will have to tie them or risk yourself or children get bit. I have had some luck with old dogs that people had replacements for and wanted rid of, one only lived 6 months but was a damn good dog, just real old.

Get ready to be a Vet, learn about the sicknesses (many) and the treatments.

Expect your dogs to get poisoned, especially if you have something someone else might want. Know the symptoms and how to treat it, 50/50 chance you will be successful. I am batting around 500 on that one. Been lucky.

Brothers, I had the sister for 9 months before she died, she was amazing, I really miss her. The parents are MONSTERS.

My daughter loved Amos , must be brothers..and wanted to bring to a cattle ranch with two other "pups"...both "pound" dogs

one , we were told was a mix Lab/Great Dane....we thought Great...a lazy big dog...WRONG...That lovely dog keeps getting ripped-up on barbed wire from chasing anything; so much, we carry super glue...ends up that LAZY dog was a Black Mouth Cur...a Southern Boar hunting dog... loves the truckbed rides...when we get to the entrance of the ranch, we dump him on the road...he runs in front of the truck at 25mph for the next 1 1/2 miles...we just love this pup..

Lesson: Do not believe what someone tells you have the "mix" is...see the parents

I've read about people poison-proofing their dogs by training them only to eat on command and from known people. I have friends with Search and Rescue trained dogs who work with their dogs that way, but I don't know if anyone strange to the dogs has ever tried slipping them treats. How well does that work in practice?

Depends on the dog. My big dog gets fed very well (adds up to around $1,000 a year). Today's meal, chicken, beef, and rice to go with the dog food.

He will put almost anything in his mouth, not hungry, just a mouthy breed of dog. So poisoning is always a concern. Have had some little dogs get it.

I have had to "snake" train some of my pups...

Not for the Peta crowd, as one needs:

    Shock collar set on HIGH
One Mohave Green Rattle Snake (in cage)
    One minute

    Dog sees snake
Dog goes to cage to check snake out (smells it)
ZAP (It only takes one time)

Sounds cruel...but where I was the snakes (great for the environment) were a serious issue for all..

I do not know, but if individuals are poisoning dogs...maybe there is a method to train them.

Here they use Sea Sponge to poison dogs with and it is a cruel death. Rockman use this as revenge. Poisoned meat is always a concern too, but out of reach for the common thief.

My big dog is not a great eater so I don't worry much, he is picky and knows I will feed him well, picking up pieces of random meat or stinking fish are pretty low priorities for him.

He likes soupy food, so that helps.

what a beauty. i am surprised with the response of a shepard cross. that was actually what i was thinking originally, but have not seen many, thinking long hairs don't do well. also the hip thing with shepards can be a heartbreaker when they start to age. so they have a diff make-up when it comes to legs and back eh?

I haven't seen any local GSD that was all slope-backed and heavy boned like US show GSDs.

I'm posting here instead of by email because others should check with Kit and the place in Granada when looking for dogs. I've got no Catahoulas available for sale and can't breed again without bringing in another female, so Kit is probably your best bet to finding what you're looking for.

Kit's on this site, just search her info. Kit Cooper.

This is the rescue place? If so, second the recommendation.

Another source of dogs that have had appropriate puppy care might be a good local vet who knows who's been buying vaccines and worming meds for a litter. I think the Russian vet raised Lola herself, and it was a relief that the medical records paperwork said the first visit to a vet wasn't just two days before unloading the dog on me.

http://www.buildingnewhope.org/casa-lupita.html -- is this what you were talking about? I couldn't find Kit Cooper on this site.

Contact Kit. She also has connections in CR, lots of Gringos leaving, some good dogs getting left behind.

Get you a mature dog, then start looking puppies. A good dog is a good dog no matter what it's age.
