Nope -- true. Boeing did the same thing with the 748.
As to p*issing off shareholders? Nope. The airframe and systems need to go through the testing (in this case it was for extended ETOPS) so the flight plan filed and/or flown is pretty much irrelevant. Some PR for airplane geeks but nothing more.

That airplane (787) is going to be the best commercial aircraft and one that all the others are modeled after once they work all the bugs out.
