Default Unfinished Revolution - Daniel Ortega and Nicaragua's Struggle for Liberation

"I think the book “Unfinished Revolution: Daniel Ortega and Nicaragua’s Struggle for Liberation” by Kenneth E. Morris does a fairly good job of describing the trials and tribulations of President Ortega’s life and how they created a man more complex than his critics would like to believe. In addition, this book is a good history of the past 30 years of Nicaragua."

I think the next 5 years will be very interesting. Castro can't be long for the World, Chavez ain't going to be running no Marathons,I guess Eva will make some noise, but Daniel is going to be the one left holding the bag. The mystery is if it is going to be a bag of gold or a bag of dog poo.

We have been talking about this down at the office... a lot of the old communist are dying away.

Personally, I don't think their cause will die with them. There is too much power in place and their heirs will be able to maintain everything and add their own personal touches in short time. In fact these heirs are probably already laying down plans on how they are going to benefit from the loss of their parents.

To judge by the cover, the big O is definitely balding on top. Despite being two years old (written before O's re-election) there were only two reviews of this on Amazon. The guy who gave it 2 (out of 5) stars points out that the author didn't interview Ortega. I would have thought that's where you start if you're to write a book about someone alive today. It's a problem when author & subject are on opposite side of a rather large cultural divide.

It would seem that Nicaragua Dispatch is now a primary source of Nica news for English readers. The article lists several other books on Nicaragua. I read "Blood of Brothers" by S.Kinzer (& not Grindle) and thought it excellent, even though it's 21 years old. (In the new edition, that's 5 years old, Kinzer added an epilog that covered the scandle of Aleman.) Kinzer wrote a lot about Borge, who died day before yesterday. He took over Somoza's old torture facilities in the hill behind the Crown Plaza (under Hospital Militar, by laguna Tiscapa) to root out enemies of the revolution. Ortega was the face of Sandinismo; Borge the enforcer.

We have all pontificated for years. Something abnormal is going on at the top. If they think she can run, they are crazy, no one in the Party will support her. The Opposition could beat her in a rigged election, albeit from prison it seems.

Remembrances of days when we were all younger and more naive.
I'm kind of reminded of that line from Macbeth: ...... " a tale told by an idiot, etc, etc "

And assumed that Daniel would do the right thing eventually,, and leave a Hero of the Revolution.
It's the Nicaraguan aprovechar, albeit on a much grander scale than we are used to.

Except maybe JPJW,, he seems to have it figured out back then, before spell checkers:

I assume Ortega uses the Chavez vote counting software that we now use up here, so it doesn't matter what anyone says or does. I only wonder, why Ortega, of all the people in all the gin joints?

Ortega could win a clean election. I know it sounds crazy but is true. That is what scares me about what is going on, some turbulance at the top.

Not at all. In Leon & Chinandega, there's no doubt he'd win. After 2018 and the tranques paralyzing the country, people welcome a strong-arm leader who gives them stability. Caudillos are LAm traditions, not constitutional democracy. The economy's slow but that's America's and the EU's doing, according to most Nicas here.

Lots of Sandinista families have a big stake in a continual FSLN government. (Just like the swamp in the USA who got totally bent out of shape when Trump won in 2016.) Tons of folks on the gov'mint teat. With DOS' age, followers get nervous, esp. after he picked La Chaya as v.P., about who'll take over and what they'll do when he kicks the bucket. So the game is in play. But the in-power Sandis are united against the Chamorros or any others viewed as puppets to US dollars.

Which is kinda funny as most of the Top dogs have homes in the US, the EU and a smattering of Peru, Costa Rica and the islands. They have become the thing they fear.

I don't think they fear El Gringo, they just use fear of him to divide people in their countries. Gotta have an external boogeyman to keep the people's eyes off your own pecadillos.

This is a tactic Daniel loves to use, but am afraid he is taking it too far.

What I meant from the 3rd person perspective - They themselves think they are still the epitome of the revolution - I read some fluff from Rosario that ended with "Luchar, Luchar, Luchar" as the last 3 words of the 2 page press release. I believe they still believe they are participating he struggle even though they are fr detached from who they really are..

Of course I am not a psychiatrist nor do I play one on TV

I doubt they really believe all the junk they spew. Even the Bolsheviks were mostly just acting. They were all rich Russian jews and wanted to stay rich, so why risk it all.

I'd vote for her if she would promise to pave the last 5 KM of trocha to my farm. I don't know which is uglier.

it's a Nicaraguan revolution/War time song it goes.
"Luchar, Luchar, Luchar es Nuestro signo de Guerra.
Vencer, Vencer, Vencer, es nuestro Ideal, Y al Grito de Patria, vencer o morir, avanzamos al triunfo de la revolucion"
