The airport is West of liberia a few miles. the Tica buses and others stop at or near that intersection, but never seen or heard of any going out there.

From Rivas I would either take a chicken bus or hire a taxi to the Frontera. A shared cab will cost you $3 or less. Cross the border on your own, you can do it in a fraction of the time it will take on the Tica bus, unless the lines are extremely long.

Once across take a bus to Liberia $2-$3, the bus station in Liberia is just a block or so East of the Pan Am and the intersection to the airport. get a cab from there or figure out which bus is going that way. The station there in Liberia is well organized with signs and schedules well posted.

    Crossing into CR:

You will pay 20 cords to enter the Frontera. Pay $2 to exit Nicaragua. Pay nothing to enter CR.

The exceptions to this that make it worth taking tica/nica bus etc, lots of luggage or never having walked the border.

The Frontera is a cluster F***. Not difficult but a bit daunting the first time, no signs, you just start walking, usually you can follow the crowd, but that may just land you at the guy selling ice cream or the woman frying chicken.

thanks for all the usefull info. i have done the border before and have had amazing waits. the reason i ask for this bus is that apparently you do not need to step off. i have seen drivers entering customs carrying documents and also with a few passengers in tow. another nica friend said i need to go to managua to catch this bus, as it does not stop in rivas being express. however, they seemed rather vague on this. when i used to cross over at detroit for rock concerts on the bus, the border customs would just walk on the bus and check id's. would sure be worth the hassles if it were so at the frontera.

The big buses stop in Rivas, they have ticket agents there on the hiway. The drivers take all the passports and do the work, you can stay on the bus or get off and walk around. The thing is, if ANYONE on the bus has paper problems than EVERYONE on the bus gets to wait for things to get figured out, been there and done that.
