Default Back from travels... Netherlands & France

In 1994 my Grand mother on my Dad's side passed away. As her house used to be the congregating place (which is still owned by the family communally (Attached to my Oma (uncle) Bep's farm) the family decided to have a yearly reunion after that typically being the first Saturday in July.

This year we went on a semi last min trip as proposed by my Dad who had not been for some time as well. Some Snaps from Normandy France as well as my Dad wanted to see where the Canadians landed who would ultimatly free the Netherlands, lead to his emigration to Canada and allow myself to meet Chilo...

I've oft wondered about the Lone Ranger and Tonto and their pet names for each other.
Surely Tonto means stupid in Spanish, but wonder if the response is intended to be
Que No Sabe (Who doesn't know)? Fits, huh?

So one of the main purposes of the trip was to go to Juno beach where many Canadians died storming the beaches of Normandy. There is a centre to document the landing that was built and is maintained by the veterans themselves. While there is a small portion contributed by the French and Canadian governments, most of the cost of the centre was bore by veterans and families who could not find a proper manorial when they returned in 1994 for the 50th anniversary. The center opened in 2003.

The Wiki covers most of that here..

This is the memorial sculpture out front of the center which is quite simple and fitting and really the stand out of the exhibit. It is the black spec above the building in this G-map shot.

This one of the 5 looks to the beach..

This one looks directly west to the shores of Canada..

What was left behind by someone..

Do not forget your Heritage, and find out the truth in things... Not listening to the propaganda of those that over powered any of them. It is more often than not a slanted portrail of the truth.

BTW those wind mills on the first post how in the hell do they catch the wind when the squares on them appear to be empty of anything? As a Sailor it don't make sense to me....

I'm still digesting those dough boy statues. Kinda looks like cobras striking, or some kind of wierd modern dance thing, with capes and helmets. We Hicksville knee-ander-thals have no appreciation for art, do we? I appreciate what the soldiers did on D-Day, even if France doesn't.

The squares get covered in sheets of cloth. If one of the sheets falls off, the whole windmill rocks and rolls, and goes all caterwauling side to side like a drunkard. Hence he expression, "three sheets to the wind." Or so I've heard.

A Frog joke came to mind, but I will refrain.

    'tis a seafaring term. Briefly:

"To understand this phrase we need to enter the arcane world of nautical terminology. Sailors' language is, unsurprisingly, all at sea and many supposed derivations have to go by the board. Don't be taken aback to hear that sheets aren't sails, as landlubbers might expect, but ropes (or occasionally, chains). These are fixed to the lower corners of sails, to hold them in place. If three sheets are loose and blowing about in the wind then the sails will flap and the boat will lurch about like a drunken sailor."

    From: http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/t...-the-wind.html

ETA: caterwauling -- great word. Made me think of Mark Twain.
