I wonder if all those proposed tourist resorts will be as empty as all those cities China has built in their own country. They seem to spend money building things just for the sake of building. You'd think they wanted to get rid of their US Dollars as fast as possible for some reason. The pictures of the airport made me laugh too, it looked bigger than every Central American airport combined.

Surely there will be high bridges for the Pan Am highway and other roads.

The Magic of the Grand Canal

How cute is that kid, he didn't make it as a tenor, but as a magician he can be better!

Yes, but his trial by fire will be enrapturing a lot of people as well as he's enrapturing a few.

I wonder how much $hi+ I would get in if I went for a walk in the woods next week and started moving surveyors markers

    And now the rangling starts...

    Property by Rivas... Link

    Indigenous ... Link

In the first you can see a photo of a survey marker... Apparently it cuts through one wind farm..

Blow hard mows down a wind farm.. How ironic is that..

"That kid" is Laureano Ortega Murillo, son of Daniel & Rosario, first lady of Nicaragua, the poet who conquered DOS' heart (or somesuch organ) while he was in prison for bank robbery. As for his being a tenor, I heard him perform in Leon, a free open air concert. Sounded operatic to me. Laureano has been the government's main go-to-China man, meeting with Mr. HKND himself, Wang Jing.

The CEO of Cemex´s Nicaraguan subsidiary has said publicly that the canal could not be built with the type of cement made in Nicaragua. It would require building an entirely new plant. He didn´t sound very encouraging about the idea.

So then either China would build it or Cemex head office in Mexico DF would get it done...

Being that this is probably just a make work project to keep Chinese employed, I am thinking the Former...

No Deer, No Cat , No Linkbelt , No Toyota.. A sea of Great wall trucks and other Chinese made equipment..

My Cemex comment was in jest...

Are you a fool or do you get the pig! How could you think the grand canal is serious, with all the rocks to be moved?

Without clear investors, inexact maps, Ortega and Wang Chung's secrecy, promises without explanations, granting the canal by finger, mediocre standards, without studying (assembled in Bolanos' studies), law that hurts our sovereignty and our constitution

I can read the frustration both in La Prensa and in FB friends posts.. The real crux here is that it is opaque as a black hole.. There are no public disclosures of merit and no real way of knowing what is real..

Time will tell Dec 1 if shovels start hitting the ground.

So far the Data (Past infrastructure spending by the Chi-coms) points to a real go being made at this..

If their economy does not implode before 2019...

TOO BIG TO FAIL, CHINESE STYLE
50 bil is a cheap price for a military base and spy center on the american mainland. Eat your heart out, ghost of the Soviet Union!
If you watched the growth of the Mexican megaresorts, its real simple: mix govmint/private cooperation, find isolated location in the tropics, build airport.
Panama has proven the cement connection. Offer money and the cement will appear.
The only reason the east coast has not been opened up for light industry is Nic. incompetence and the reluctance of rich countries to fool with Nic`s selfdestructive politics. The Chicoms may have found a bright authoritarian regime they can work with.

My prediction, barring weather problems: canal will open on time in 10 years, with various profit centers in the east online much sooner.

And a market for my apples and strawberries . ..

Country won't be cheap anymore; the canal construction will definitely affect labor prices. Rich Nicas will buy up campo and beach. They are doing that right now, but process will accelerate. This will solidify the Ortega Murillo dynasty, as lucrative contracts will go to favored Sandinistas. How lucrative will depend on where the money is coming from. If the Chinese provide it, they will bring as much as they can, maybe even the cement. If it's funny money from canal bonds, sky will be the limit, a feeding frenzy will ensue.

One solution to the vanishing farm labor: marry a nice Nica girl and have a bunch of kids and exploit them for free labor . . .

Mark me down as still not optimistic. There would be some large money spent on the west side starting up but I do not think it will be overly difficult construction. Plenty of resources to build up equipment and materials. I think labor will be a problem. Some Nicas don't work until they need money. If Chinese labor is brought in it will cause disputes. Hopefully Wang would get a good start on the west side and it will carry the project all the way east.

As for the east side, Punta Gorda is probably the least populated route but there will still be land disputes with current residents. The east side will be hard on equipment and workers. The DAC is the DAC. I do not see property values skyrocketing. Open up Google Earth one day and follow the coast line from the Panama Canal up through Costa Rica to Nica. Miles of empty Caribbean beach.

Have they ever said which side they will start on.

First thing they will have to do is build some sort of Port on this side, you cannot pull container ships up on the beach and unload. All materials and equipment will have to come in by water, ain't nothing resembling a road near Punta Gorda and even if there was where is the stuff coming from.

A port of some kind on the Caribbean side seems like a logical start.

The thing that fascinates me most about the Canal is the logistics. Where will they get labor, how will they feed and house them, what will they do when the rains start on this side.

What will be the defining moment or event upon which we will know this project is real?

Will we wake up one morning (ala Dunkirk) and see cargo ships horizon to horizon on both coasts laden with Chinese bulldozers?

Multi - mile convoys of Cemex trucks filled with the yellow horde streaming in from Mexico playing "Flight of the Valkyries"?
