Hi All,

My wife and I are considering living here in Nicaragua (Family reasons).

I'm wondering if non spanish speaking programmer like me would be able to get a job here. Anyone else been in a similar situation? any advice?

We will be living in Jinotepe, Carazo so a commute to Managua wouldn't be that bad.

Any advice would be appreciated.

FYI, we're from Toronto.

One of our members who lives near Jinotepe had a position open for a duck plucker, but they automated the position.

Advice?

Wait for the canal to be finished and enjoy Nicaragua in the mean time.

Can programmers not work from anywhere? What became of the concrete igloo camp near Esteli?

Seriously, if there is a canal, even if it's 100% Chinese built and run, it should attract enough peripheral commercial development to keep a lot of us gringos busy if we position ourselves right.

Kidding from the others aside.. If you are a freelancer, paid by an out of country employer, over 40 or 45 yrs of age (forgot the exact number), and have $600 US a month of Verifiable income per person it is possible by a "Pensionato" application..

The application is frustrating and long (I have read)

Search for Paul Tiffer who's address and contact info is on the forum. He is a well respected Lawyer with the group.

If you are going to be employed by a company in Nicaragua it becomes much more difficult..

I'm 35, so the retiree may not work. My wife is Nicaraguan though, so I'm guessing getting the residency won't be difficult? I may be wrong.\

I may have to look onto the freelance jobs, it very competitive since you are competing with a programmers globally. My work can allow me to work from home, but they require me to be present on weekly meetings.

I'll keep looking for options.

yep... Contact Paul or some other recommended Lawyer... There is No Osgood tradition keeping the Bar straight there.. Reputation is really your only guide post..


We are 22 yrs married July 18 and plan to spend 55+ yrs there, but only the winter...


I would strongly recommend you only commit to nica full time after one of two conditions...

8 to 10 plus years married to a Nica, and their family...

Spent 2 or 3 one month stays there to get the full feel of the place...

I've been visiting Nicaragua every year since '09 and staying here for 2 months currently (leaving for T.O. in July). I grew up in the Philippines, so there are some similarities weatherwise. Just have the language issue. They call me chino here which I really dislike since I'm not chinese, but that's just the way it is

Than I say "Si' Guatamalteco" (sp?)
She says.. "Yo no soy Guatamalteco, you soy Nicaraguense.. "
I say "Guatamalteco, Salvadoranyo, Nica.. Todo is equal"

She sees the logic now, but still gets her steamed...

I was called racist by some swedes when I gave a less than complimentary remark about some immigrants doing some monkey business. Had to ask them if they had forgotten that I was an immigrant too - didn't get a reply on that one

She was raised in southern CA, on the other side of the hills from San Diego. When I got back from one of my trips to Nicaragua and was showing some people pictures I had taken, she asked, "Are they almost all Mexican down there?" I told her I don't recall meeting ANY Mexicans while in Nicaragua, but I met a lot of Nicaraguans. She just sort of shrugged her shoulders and said, "Whatever!?"
