Nice pix! I take it as a measure of my 'acculturation' to Latin America that I now see mariachis as men proud of tradition and serious about their art/livelihood. Before dipping into the tropical south, I'd thought them buffoons, out of touch with today's real music, rock. But rock has become, if not gay exactly, sexually ambiguous. My opinion of mariachis has also evolved with narco-lords killing some recently for what they sang - that's a measure a truly macho art form.
    I never met a Semite I didn't like.

You, like most gringos, saw too many mocking parodies of Mexican culture on TV. Speedy Gonzales, the Frito Bandito. Rock music went corporate in the '80s and never recovered. I couldn't name one single current top 40 hit if my life depended on it.

In 2011 I got to sit through my first Typhoon. It was in Tokyo. Did not go outside during the storm but went for a look see after..

Carlos & Luis have a restaurant/ performing venue across from the Crowne Plaza. I often stop there for a beer or a bite on the way to PriceMart.

Shelley and I were fortunate to catch Carlos AND Luis one afternoon. It was a private party to honor Luis' publication of a small volume of short stories and poems. We were staying at the Crowne Plaza, walked across the street for a late lunch, place started filling up shortly after we finished our lunch and were idling over some Toñas. We asked if we should leave, and were told, "No, Please Stay".

One of those serendipitous moments that remain with you forever. Luis sang his little song about how he prefers his donkey to a car.

In 8 days the KW blues festival takes place ..

    http://www.kitchenerbluesfestival.com/

It is quite large - 7 stages plus a bunch of local pubs that run from 11PM on. For this one I have a special roll of film (Kodak Portra 800) I plan to snap off as well..

The first pic is from Too Slim and the Tail Draggers.. One of the best acts I have seen in a long time..

Canada is a country of Hockey. Hockey season is now just a few weeks away.

As coopers town it to Baseball, Toronto is to Hockey.

This is a sculpture outside of the Hockey Hall of fame in Toronto.

I like taking pictures in Toronto, but Chilo does not let me loose in the big city unsupervised too often.

These are Faze book snaps - My Dad has a few Jamaicans working for him. On the May 24th holiday they had a similar BBQ to this done up in green and white.. They had Kick ass Jerk Chicken.. Anyways.. During the discussion I asked where they got such a cool BBQ.. They mentioned that it was borrowed but a retired Tobacco farmer would weld them up an equiv for $50 if they supply the barrel.. Well they did not have a barrel but I had access to 2 and they found another 2 - the 80 yr old Tobacco farmer came to my Dad's Green house and welded all 4 up. THe jamacians need 3 B/C some do not eat pork, even anything made on a BBQ that has cooked pork.. One of the 3 remaining has in Big letters.. Jerk Pork Only.. Which made me think.. Hummm Jerk Pork!!! I have 2 pork Buts for later in the week.. I am thinking one will be Jerk...

Nice looking grill. We have a similar smaller one out at the farm, could use a bigger one tho. Thinking a brick oven might also be a good way to go.

I built one out of blocks 4 feet wide 6 feet long and 5 foot high inside dementions ... Can cook a whole 300# pig in it... I haven't used it in ages, if you want it come and get it... (Joking here) .... I am no longer entertaining or Cooking for Crowds that big... But it didn't cost so much to do really.

Not a bad idea . . . a BBQ pit / hurricane shelter. Thanks and I'll be right there to pick it up.

The Pig looks burned, but it was not. It was "Blackened" by my use of the green Guava Leaves for a smoked flavor to penetrate the meat while slow roasting his carcass over coals for about 10-12 hours.... Matter of fact Big Jonh sampled some of it IIRC. I built it myself for about 100 dollars and did cook many pigs and chickens in it.

That's still the best BBQ pig I've ever had.

Our hicksville charcoal grille is just see-mint blocks dry stacked on the ground, and really should have some kind of walls around the grilling area, and a smoke stack would keep ash off the food and out of our faces. It's a mess, but it cost us nada.

Some nice looking pig. Thats a pretty big cooker, maybe if I built a dual chamber one I could justify one that large. Could cook in the small side and vent smoke through the large side. Then it could be used for smoking meat and cooking pigs.

Uuuu She and Roger sent me some of the stuff they Smoked and cooked in his "Invention" I sorta like it too.... They are in a "Use Cyber Cafe' Only" lull right now for some reason or another... Once they get straightened out on their new connections I am sure she will be back...
