    Default Name that thing

Boatswain I believe is the correct spelling.

Alex, I'll take Etymology for $500 - where does the word boatswain come from? And for final Jeopardy, why do they have those scary chairs and dog whistles? And why is it pronounced like you've drunk a barrel of rum?

A boatswain (/ˈbsən/, formerly and dialectally also /ˈbtswn/), bo's'n, bos'n, or bosun, is the senior crewman of the deck department and is responsible for the components of a ship's hull. The boatswain supervises the other members of the ship's deck department, and typically is not a watchstander, except on vessels with small crews. Other duties vary depending on the type of ship, her crewing, and other factors.

The coxswain /ˈkɒksən/ is the person in charge of a boat, particularly its navigation and steering. The etymology of the word gives a literal meaning of "boat servant" since it comes from cox, a coxboat or other small vessel kept aboard a ship, and swain, an Old English term derived from the Old Norse sveinn meaning boy or servant.
