Default Metropolitano Hospital in Managua (Vivian Pellas)

I found this post on the Expatexchange ....thought it was something good to know.

Metropolitano Hospital in Managua (Vivian Pellas)

For people that are new here or for those traveling to Nicaragua you may run into a need for emergency or other medical service. By now you know that the Pellas is an excellent hospital though there are several almost as good and better, depending on your needs.

Even a hospital as modern as Pellas has the typical Nica problems like not answering the phone. If you get stuck in this situation, here is the contact information for a very helpful person which speaks English. She heads up the medical tourism office at Pellas.

Every one is gaga over Pellas hospital. You are paying for shine. When they opened they had no Cat Scan, Hospital Militar did. Hospital Integral is damn fine, Ask John Wayne about it, I have been in there, fine by me. Sure Pellas is great but the prices are nearly double the others. The big time Doctors work all the hospitals, and if needed can come to a hotel room, all you are paying for is a bed.

Hospital Integral is the only one I have had experience with, and it worked out fine for me, I am still around to be a thorn in everyone's side..

As Cookshoe says the cream of the Dr.s in Nicaragua work all of them as far as I know, and are Dog Gone Good at what they do...

    Ahem.....

I did not mean to promote Vivian Pellas Hospital....only provide contact information.

Personally, my only semi-experience is with Militar where Maria's mom was well taken care of.

As far as Integral.... well if they can and want to save someone like JPJW...they must be pretty good and dedicated.....lol.

They were dedicated, I will say that... Right down to the Galley in the place, and the Nurses on Deck 24/7...

Not remotely a fan of docs and hospitals, but after seeing the job they did with JW, I would def go there (Integral) if I had an emergency! Our experience with Metropolitano was brief , in the eye department. Long wait, not a thorough exam, then almost double the price of a previous quote from another place. Ended up not using them, but this is just one experience. I'm sure others have positive stories...and there might be others with some bad ones...share, y'all.

Been to Metropolitano once, Dr was very professional, thorough exam, all for $35, so no real complaints. Hospital appeared very clean. I visited a person in 1 of the hospitals near Huembes, and wow, it was a total different story, dirty and just a very sad place!!

Read any Nica forum and over and over you see people going gaga for Pellas, I only know it from seeing it and what people tell me, never been inside. Everyone says it is first class and I have no reason to think otherwise. Just wanted to throw out some other (and cheaper) options.

About 8 years ago my friend Marvin was in Integral for a minor procedure. His private room, with bath and tv and a/c was $40 a day. 6 years ago when Marvin had a stroke we went to Militar, he was taken straight from the ambulance into a Cat Scan, Cat Scan was $75, and had to put up a $500 deposit to get him admitted, that was no big deal as he was obviously going to need more than $500 worth of care. He was in ICU for a few days then moved into a private room, the room even had a couch in it so someone could sleep there.

Most of the Doctors I have dealt with spoke very good English and my experience with them is that they will take plenty of time to talk to you, never rushed. Even when Marvin had some work on his foot, the Dr saw me there every day and sat down with me in the hall one day to explain everything. Marvin's Dr after his stroke spent about 30 minutes a day talking to us.

Pellas does have a kind of Insurance plan that may be of interest to some, I believe all the info ins on their website, more a discount plan than insurance but it seemed reasonable when I was reading about it some time back.

The Dr that was JW's primary is the Dr to the stars and a few years back a consultation with him was a whopping $35, great English and great Dr.

I guess the one downside of cheap healthcare is keeping track of it, you have to pay the hospital, pay the Dr, pay the farmacia, pay this, that, and the other.

Pellas is shiny and clean inside, what gringos are used to. Militar felt like being in a run down school building. Just my impressions of the physical facilities.

My understanding is that Militar is currently adding a very big addition.

Militar is adding on and I meant to mention there are different levels of facilities there. One thing I was not crazy about was people always outside the room asking for money for prescriptions and surgeries and such. Down the hall and downstairs from the private room were some not so nice rooms with lots of people in them. My experience there may not be typical. Marvin and I were met at the airport and had an escort to the hospital by a Politico so things were set in motion before we arrived. Had planned to go back to Integral, but only Militar had a Cat Scan then, so we went there.

I was in and out of the ICU many times and it was fine, not much privacy but well equipped. Not so sure about nursing staff as private round the clock nurses were hired to be in the room, must have seen some nurses but honestly cannot remember. Nurses at Integral were great, Marvin had a room next to a nurse station and they popped in regularly to see how things were going.
