Any casting rods available in Puerto Cabezas?

I wonder if anybody sells cheap casting rods in Puerto? Something I don't feel sorry to leave behind after I leave. They are so expencive to drag along on an airplane, so I decided to give it a try to find something from there. I can bring my own reel and rigs, they fit comfortabely into the luggage. I'm not a great fisherman anyway, but every once in a while I reel something in here and there. And last year drinking Tona's 3 months in a row got finally boring, so I decided to try something different this year.

Only a few places in MGA I have seen Fishing Canes (that is what they are called on this side), I had few nice ones I brought down but sold them. JW may know some place over there in Port, but I think they are rare on this side.


Airlines are easy about fishing rods, no problem carrying them, sometimes can carry on.

I have seen very FEW "Dingbatter" rods here... If any...

Everyone just hand lines with the rig of their choise attached to the end of it.

Those Cuban Yo'yo's are the deluxe thing here. But most of the locals use something fashoned out of most anything to wind up their mono when they get finished killing fish.

Yes, I have seen mexicans off the coast of Holbox bringing in 40 kilo medregals with bare hands. And Sinai beduins don't know what is rod and what is reel, just line and rig. But I'm lazy and kind of enjoy using rod and reel.
I chekced out that Spirit Air will rip me off, if I bring rods with me, so I need to buy 'em from Managua. Any suggestions?

You may still be better off bringing one, that kind of stuff is pricey here and selection is crap. There was a guy in Granada on Craigslist selling a pile of small Penn rods and reels. I don't remember the price but it was reasonable enough that I thought about buying a few. He has posted them a few times so I bet he still has them. The ones I sold, finally got tired of dusting them. There are some around but outside of MGA they will be hard to find in a store. The ones I have seen in MGA are toy stuff, I am sure someplace has good gear but it will be 2-3 times the costs in the States, may be worth paying the baggage fees.

Peruse Nicaragua CL and maybe put an ad or 2 on there

Thanks! Looks like it's better to forget about fishing with rod and reel and stick with beer. I was advised by locals not to go to the beach anyway, unless I have considerable fightforce with me. Othervise I would be relieved from my belongings in no time, they told me. So my plan was to get friendly with officer(s) who command the Muelle and fish from there. I don't know about fish, but at least safe place.

I'm sorry, Little Corn Tom! English is Sinai Tom's 4-th language and it's far away from perfect. I do experience language (and cultural) barrier time after time. My last replay was Thanks to Cookshow for pointing out from where I can buy rods. But because the seller was not from Puerto Cabezas and Spirit Air (my carrier) charges too much for extra baggage (rods) I decided not to bring any rods. Time reserved for fishing will be shared between restaurants Kabu Payasca and El Malecon in Bilwi, drinking cold Tona's.
Each time I've been to Bilwi the locals, not just one but all of them, stronly suggest me not to go to the beach alone, especially in the night when the fish bites. They say I can do it only if I have few tuff locals with me, otherwise I would be relieved from my belongings by the gang lurking along the beach. If hotel owner, restaurant owner, taxi drivers, fishermen and restaurant staff all tell me the same thing I may have reason to believe them?
Muelle of Bilwi is guarded by armed soldiers and at least once on my trip to Cayos miskitos I found the army captain who commands this place really nice and reasonable guy. I don't know if there is the same guy in command, but I was gonna give it a try to get permition to fish from the muelle. Muelle is gated and guarded by two guys with AK 47-s. Without captains permition I would have no chanche to fish from there. Hope it explained?

I never heard of Muelle before.

JPJW posted some pictures a few years ago of very big snook that his boys caught using handlines in Port. He could probably give some good advice or help arrange a trip. I understand that he caught a fish or two in his past.

Everyone fishes on the Muelle, the only time they are not allowed on there is when a tankard of petrol comes to unload so they keep it secured.

Getting an "IN" with the military does not seem to ever be a problem as long as no fuel ships are in there that would require security, and I think it is more for a fire hazzard than anything else because the do land Gasoline as well as diesel.

The rains have started and this will push a lot of Jungle/Mangrove marine life to the sea. Then if you can catch a "Land Wind" a breeze a blowing off the land to the sea it seems to bring all the marine life close in to shore.

Always plenty of kids fishing the Muelle here, never seen any big ones caught but see them catch plenty. A few years ago I knew a gringo that often fished off the Muelle at one of the fish plants and he said people over there were always pulling in some nice fish.

In corinto my cuidador always fished off my boat tied up at the portuaria (muelle). Usually only caught a few pargos for the fritanga. However he once caught a Mero (jewfish) that went 285 on his hand line. My buyer gave him .90 cents a pound so with the twenty a day I paid him he had real nice day
