Keep looking. Last trips up I have seen it here and there. FDC is easy to find up there.

If you are in DC contact the Nicaraguan Ambassador, he is a nice guy and sure to know where to find some.

In Rhode Island 1 place could order me 750ml of FDC, was going to be $30..... After paying $16 for 1.75L, in MGA,just couldn't do it,lol

I enjoyed Tona......but I'm not a beer snob......anything that is not too heavy and cold, works for me

    So some general-isms...

    1) Masaya bypass road is done - Damn it is quiet in town now... If it were 2 yrs ago,@7AM (Like it it now) , the noise would be constant drone from the Managua Masaya Hwy - Now just the odd bus or loud Bike heard. It is really nice.

    2) Reading the Hydro - Sitting outside talking with the BIL and buddy with binoculars comes buy - Looks up at the meter, punches in the meter reading to his phone, print out comes from his printer on the hip, instant Hydro bill. Kinda cool.

    3) No more tube TVs in the stores.. All flat screens.. Very pricey flat screens they are too.

    4) Forms - You now need to fill out 2 forms per person and one per family. One Immigration and one health per person, One customs per family. Health asks things like fever, cough etc etc.

    5) Tona is in 473ml tall boys - A little pricey at 24.3 cords a piece...

    6) Exchange - 26.05 is the best we could get..

    7) Lines at the Super Pali were insane... As I walked out I checked the sign again to be sure it was not a cost co...

    Rosita with her morning bread...

This is the Parrot I have written about in the past. My SIL in Canada bought her on a visit 7 or 8 years back and was surprised she could not bring it back to Canada... Imagine that .. She lives with Marta since then..

Last time we were here in July it was 2005 - Needless to say the July 19 celebrations were less "over the top"...

This time we will be right in the thick of the goings on, in Masaya anyways..

Not even thinking for a moment to go to MGA.. July 19 on a Saturday.. I think the crowds may actually effect the rotation of the earth or prompt an earthquake risk increase...

Heard band practice today close to the market but the winds took the sounds too many directions to pin it down..

Bill, that's a good rate, take it. Don't get hung up on the difference 25.9 and 26.05, even if you spend $5,000 in-country on your vacation here the difference in change will amount to less than $30.

The sides of the fan grill keep the chicken from falling on the floor. A fancy weber grill does not come with that option!

For those who have visited/lived/live in Nicaragua, the grilled chicken picture seems to me to represent "normal" life in Nicalandia. For those who have never visited, the repurposed fan grill might be a little off-putting, as well as the ever-present trash laying about. However, the presence of a spare set of tongs lying on the ground near (under?) the customer's feet might be something a little less inviting for most.

Even growing up as I did in the U.S., I could picture my grandmother taking a soiled towel from her apron string and wiping any stray dirt/mud from the tongs on the ground, and using them for the next chicken being served, and not thinking anything of it. Heck, I'd have eaten it and would likely still do so if that happened in Nicaragua next time I am there.

I've had a few Sultan cigars myself and have enjoyed them. I tried to get a box of their "Cafe con Leche" cigars, but can't seem to get them to respond to e-mails to make sure they have a box or two available when I get there.

The last several years I have taken the typical tourist carriage ride through Masaya and our driver (Mariano, when I can get him), stops by the Doña Elba factory/store so I can pick up several boxes to take home. They have some very fine cigars.

While sitting in the square in Granada we were hoping for a cooling rain.. Even the rain was hot...

Anyone looking to change cash at the exchange in the square 1) The rate is horrid.. C$21/$1 US... 2) You have to show a passport or Celdua to change cash..

Sorry, typed without thinking. Sultan and Doña Elba are both in Granada, not Masaya.

If you are still in Granada and interested in a nice meal, check out El Zaguan on the alley/street behind the cathedral. Very good steaks as well as some upscale Nicaraguan choices. Look for the bullskin rug in the doorway.

What DOES "zaguan" mean? That used to be the name of the now Toro Negro steakhouse in Liberia. I was told it means "the trail or the path", specifically like those narrow foot paths you see in the campo going back to people's houses.

When you spend some time in Guanacaste, you begin to realize the extent of the original Nicaraguan population and influence.
