I breezed through these and need to come back and read them fully when I have more time. We just visited the Corn Islands for the first time this past November. Having no previous recollections to compare to, I nevertheless did find that Little Corn (or at least along the coastal area near the docks) was quite crowded with tourists - myself included. The panga ride to/from Big Corn was full both ways and I imagine it is that way quite often.

Yes, things change and I guess we often focus on the changes that we don't much like and remember the past through rose-tinted spectacles. The intention of the blog posts was not to say that the islands were so much nicer in the past but to highlight what the past was like....or at least how some islanders remembered life on the islands as being. But perhaps the first blog post came across as being rather negative!

Always good info from the elders, had never heard this- You’d store the coconut by tarring the eye, to preserve it.

My Farm is a small piece of a once larger holding, that holding (approx.90 acres) produced over half a million Coconut a year during it´s prime. Coconut was big biz on CI. Gaston up in Port was an Ace Coconut picker and husker and I have had many people tell me that he and his crew could pick and husk a few thousand a day.

Me and coconuts from time to time do not get along.... I love the flavor of food cooked with it and to eat the bread made with it is to die for almost......

But if I OD on food cooked with it, it gives me a case of the trots UNREAL...

They do have a bush medicine made with the milk and ahjo saine (sp) and it is used as a "Purge" Purgante....

Now let me tell ya something, my 'ole Farmer Grandmother when evah one of us children would get a sour stomach a dose of Black Drought Molasses followed by a dose of Epsom salts... Would go thru ya like Grant took Richmond, and you would surely get cleansed out with it...

BUT that Coconut with the Ajho Saine... I took it one time, well, two times the First and the LAST....

It hit me so hard I could not get anywhere more than 50 or 100 feet from a toilet.. and I could not get it stopped for a day or two till I took a WHOLE large bottle of Pepto-Bismol... That was the cork that stopped it....
