I jumped on TRN at the time of the schism, after good old Miskito Alan up & died and Fydel took over NL. Before that NL was great, a war zone of ideas & counter-thoughts, the best introduction a gringo laden with mental baggage could get to this alternative culture, whose very history is argumentative. My mind stagnates in the swamp of mega-mutual agreement, so I tried to stay active in both camps, but I've become reduced to a virtual voyeur here and NL essentially self-extinguished. TRN entertains (silly is as silly be, but the 'toons are lopsided propaganda), when life doesn't get in the way, but it rarely challenges conceptions (pre- & post-) and rarely ventures to extrapolate where this socialist dictatorship that many here call our new home is headed. But why should it? Day by day life in the tropics is interesting.

So, go where it may or stay, I'll continue to lurk. And lob an occasional verbal mortar.

They say there was once a small town, way out in the boonies, and there were no lawyers there so one day a big city lawyer moved out there thinking he was going to make a killing, since there was no competition. But he had no clients at all, until a second lawyer moved into town...

    Kumbi-ya and a guitar...

I fell into this bunch just before my 3rd visit in '08 - I think it was some sort of question on wireless router to a local internet shop. {Posted the same question on both NL and here)

This one seems far more to be to my liking

Have met Kevin, Mel, Josh, and Mike

The current Nica pages on Facebook are so superficial it is humourous (Hence the SJDS thread)

Now that we are in the last 48 months of the work a day world - Maybe less because of downsizing and other winfalls - I am conflicted a bit in that the Nica that is forming is not the Nica we made our decision to snow bird too those 6 to 10 yrs ago.. But time will tell.

There is a regular meeting of Expats in Jinotega and a loose association of Expats in Managua on their respective Fazebook pages.

Bill probably has a better idea about the FB pages, they are plentiful.... I lurk on some when I have time and connection. No shit, have seen people ask if they can buy Toothpaste in Nica, AND they were already here.

Easy visit if you are ever up for it. LaCostena flights would be the only big cost. If you (or anyone else) don't mind roughing it I can get you set-up for a couple nights. Nice beach breeze and might even have power sooner than later.

Then a hop over to the islands for a few days and you have pretty much seen it all.

Thanks for the invite. Roughing it is no problem, but there are limits as to how much flesh & blood I'll sacrifice to members of phylum insecta. (I covet what's mine.) The snag to planning such an adventure is family: a 2-yr-old that demands & gets my full attention, two kids in school in León and my wife (mother of the lot). These anchors (on lovely velvet chains) keep me grounded. Someday . . . somehow, we'll go.

Seems that people are leaving Mother Russia in droves, our town is full of them.

It's not that any one country has changed, it's that all of them have, and not for the better.

If we are so great (and we are) then why do they want to change it?
    Life's different here ... It's a whole 'nother pace.

Yep, some of us dummies moved down here during Nic.s brief experiment with democracy.
Some moved down here for Nic's backwardness, which is disappearing daily.
A lot moved here to bash America, but they are now being outnumbered by missionaries and surfers and such.

You missed the guys who moved here for the young (I'm talking over 18, not children) ... >>> girls and women
And, the guys who came for the cheap beer and rum.

It's cheap living if you grow and raise your own, and it gets progressively easier with the availability of the stuff you need.
It's been a good life for many on the site.

I don't think it's a good place for someone young with ambition, talent and enthusiasm.
Merit and talent matter much less here than family.
You see that aspect of the culture everywhere.
    It will always limit Nicaragua.

Lots of reasons to come here,, and as many to leave.
