Default <sniff> <sniff> a farewell to the calling card - We knew you well.....

Going back 25 years - The old faithful, the international calling card.

Early 90's trudge in the snow to get the cards from the only place in town that carried them.

Fast forward to the early 00's when buying $2.50 cards on the net became prevalent and every corner store carried them.

Then came the promise of no charge (or lower charge as you have to buy "data" ) of Skype, Google and Yahoo messenger - Neither of which worked because it was too complex on their end.

And now - Whatsapp - A cell phone based application for smart phones.

I had known about it for about 2 yrs and SIL Nella had been using it for one year, but Chilo just was too close to her calling cards with local numbers, 12 digit pin's and then a dial of the home number to break te habbit..

Now, with many of the family having some sort of rudimentary smart phone and data, Chilo tried her first Whatsapp call to Marcos today and then to her Marta via her nieces phone.

She seems to be hooked.. The calling card may soon pass from memory as has cable TV, impact printers and film photography..

Chilo is laughing trying to get her attention and listing to the conversation in the house giggling al along - been about 5 min now...

I said all she (Chilo) has to do is hang up but it it too much fun..

That WhatsAp works really well, streams video after a fashion,
Ariana uses it constantly to keep in touch.

With a WiFi connection, there is no cost. Calls to Nicaragua are surprisingly expensive otherwise.

I can't imagine using it with a business client, but for friends and family, it's a winner.
