I couldn't agree more. The only reason Ortega enjoys high marks is due to the canal. His people are starving, they go to Costa Rica to pick, and the canal will without a doubt provide work and funds for families and municipalities. However, as you note, the cost is huge and is based on out moded transportation as if huge ships will always be the vehicles for good.

Ortega has no interest in the environment, although he talks a good talk, his interest is to assur3e his family dynasty continues and this means more than just a cow a year, it means jobs.

Unfortunately Nicaragua like other extractionist countries cannot make the leap from feudalism to Socialism and skip capitalism. Latin America is littered with those who have tried. So, they make a pact with the devil, a Chinese one this time, and embrace los Nuevos Conquistadores.

A comment on a comment on the TeleSur article:

    https://www.telesurtv.net/english/op...0908-0015.html

The article is interesting,, but TeleSur still insists that Venezuela is a people's democracy. Like North Korea. Or Cuba

Bottom line: there is no ROI available with this canal. Absent some state actor with an agenda the canal is not going to be built.

China has it's own backyard, and it's NOT Nicaragua.

The article starts out well enough but then devolves into accusations that the Ku Klux Klan is behind the Nica Act.
I doubt that the Ku Klux Klan knows where Nicaragua is. Much less cares.

" . . .That was the reason for the Sandinista insurgency of the 1920s.
Today, that same mercenary ultraconservative opposition, mixing up Torquemada and the Ku Klux Klan, work in support of the NICA Act, which effectively imposes an economic blockade on Nicaragua. ..."

How they got Torquemada into there,, I have no idea. And to mention CNN and Fox News in the same sentence . . ..
The Ku Klux Klan despised Papists as much as Negroes.

With remittances totaling some $1.26 billion,, almost 10% of total GDP, this can hardly be deemed economic blockade.
Ariana alone sends $300-400 back home every month.

Interestingly,, Ortega hasn't yet figured out how to apply "Fidel's Haircut", which requires conversion of dollars and euros into Cuban convertible pesos at 80 cents on the dollar.
The Cuban national peso traded at 24 to the dollar while I was there. Convertible pesos are pegged to the dollar, but of course,, you lose that 20% off the top.

I do not understand why people send remittances "back home" over decades. What long term problem does it solve? Seems to me that it simply creates a generation or two or more of dependent people......to what end?

Perhaps what Central America needs is a generation or two of hungry citizens who will be motivated to create internal change rather than flee to another locale.

That reminds me of a cartoon I saw. Two "Indigenous persons" were looking at a statue of Columbus. One said, "Wouldn't it be great to go back to before he came?"

The other says, "Yes, the good old days of human sacrifices, enslaving each other, and living to the age of 29!"

It's like the 2 black slaves picking cotton in the heat and the dirt and the smart slave says to the dumb slave "I sure will be glad when Whitey invents polyester!"

They send remittances home for years saying "sure , mom, I'm coming home, but in the meantime here's some money to add on a room to the house. I'll be home before you know it". Translation: "no way in hell I'm going to go back and live in that crap"

Yeah, remittances give people a reason to not do anything here, keep the peace, and hope for a chinaman to save them. Meanwhile, Nic. just signed a military alliance with Taiwan.

Remittances are how immigrants pay non-immigrants to stay in the old country.

They also remove enormous amounts of money from the US economy.

And interestingly enough , Esteli is the second largest recipient of remittances after Managua, despite that there are 8 other departments with higher populations.

Yes, but it WAS the Good Old Days for the few people at the top of the food chain. Some of them lived to ripe old ages.

When I got to Germany in the early sixties there were a lot of grizzled old NCO's lamenting the good old days,,, when they would get laid for a Hershey bar.
A Hershey bar was a nickel (and a Coke the heavy green bottle was five cents too).

Crying into their nickel Heinekens at the club: "NOW all the German girls wanted to GET MARRIED,, for Christ's Sake!"

I've been watching Hell On Wheels, catching up culturally after my time in the vast Nicaragua wasteland.
    There was one great line, actually there are several ;

Hotter than a Whorehouse on Nickel night.

NOW, THOSE were the the good old days.
As Sprinsteen sang, " . . those "days" are gone boys and they aint coming back ..."
    With poetic license.

I understand that I CAN get SKY from a vendor in Estelí, they WILL install the dish on the farm.
I'm familiar with SKY from CR, lots of nice stuff.
But,,I enjoy watching two or three episodes at a time on the DVDs.

I've been trying to get my Bohannen on,, Shelley is starting to get pissed. Hmmpf,, Yep, all knowing stare, in response to any question.
I need the hat, and maybe that hair.

$133B removed from the US economy every year. That's the entire GDP of Kazakhstan, gone poof. Every. Year. Imagine if that money stayed in the US, spent locally. The sales tax revenues of the States would be boosted.

That is 7.2% of the US GDP, in cash removed from circulation. You'd think that would cause inflation, beyond the basic price increases the government tries to hide from us.

It's getting tougher and tougher to get in the door at La Colonia because of the long line of WU payees.
They do move them fast. It's where I always go.

There used to be only one WU in Condega. If they'd played their cards right, they might still be the only one.
The owners are very nice but the girl working the WU is family and moves at the speed of lodo.

No business exists (for long) that pays their workers more than they're worth. Beyond their wages & bene's. overhead, inventory, rent, salaries of bosses, a healthy profit for shareholders & future growth, etcetera, must all be produce from their labor, which increases the USA's GDP. Besides they have to eat, buy clothes that wear out, commute and live in some ghetto, where - for the most part - they are a civilizing influence over the welfare druggies they live beside.

What they remit to family in the 3rd world is nothing to the USA, relatively. Hell, we print dollars.

And we have no debt ceiling.

Which means, taxes are an illusion. Why do we pay taxes, when they can just print the money they need to run things, and when they can't print fast enough, go into more debt?

Because taxes are a means to control the people, and as long as the IRS carries guns, they will be effective.

Ariana's "new" house is so humble but she is so proud of having something to herself. Getting in was a chore: She allowed a friend to use her name for electrical service last March and the friend never paid the bill.
So,, $272 had to be paid first, and then,, because she was such a poor credit risk she had to pony up a hefty deposit.

I gave her some furniture, her boss gave her some furniture which I trucked over,, a nice couch, dining table and chairs.
She is proud of supporting her sons and extended family, proud of her contribution.

Hayner has a brand new bike,, the envy of La Lima. A smartphone of his own (OK,, that was my doing,, and probably a bad decision).
But he got a lot of face out of it. Those who know Nicaragua will know of what I speak.
Sebastian has his own toy smart phone and contentedly chats with Hayner (or anyone who will give him a few minutes).

The thing is,, I'd trade with Ariana in a heartbeat. I'd paint the front of the house,, fix the cooler motor and get new pads.
The struggle is what life is all about.

Her boss has done well in the twelve years she has been here.
Still illegal,, she owns her own house and built a small house at the back of her lot that she rents out.

An amnesty would provide a huge boost to the economy, as the illegals come out of the shadows and buy cars, etc.
The amounts spent might be small, but the total number will be huge.
For many,, or most,, the opportunity to leave and visit family in --wherever-- and return will be what they value most.

And it looks like it's going to happen. Candidate Trump might make it part of his second term, but the groundwork will be laid.
Melania needs to add Spanish to her list of languages.

The Latinas,, the ones who can vote,, will love her.
The idea of paying $750 for a pair of flats is every Latin's dream.

Hillary is such a pathetic figure. I hope she runs again.
If you sense some ShadenFreude towards the Dims,, well,, what can I say?

I had Krisnia help me work out a translation for Stick it where the sun doesn't shine: Pongalo donde no brilla el sol. Por lado.
    Por lado is sideways.

On the horse,, we never could agree on a translation for " . . . him, and the horse he rode in on."
I had to settle for ..... y su caballo tambien The first part was easy

    Which I actually like better

Govmint spending (Fed & States) is 20% of USA-GDP. The GDP calculation does not include transfer payments: Soc Sec, welfare, pensions - such stuff that doesn't contribute to a nation's GDP.

When transfer payments are included, govmints spend 42% of USA-GDP, 49% of UK-GDP, 36% of Russia's GDP, 26% of Nica's GDP.

Amnesty would lead to more people voting Dem. The socialists would go power mad and push the remnant American people to civil war. If Trump can't get rid of the 11 million, he might as well retire.

It's all about demographics. When the ethnic Americans are a minority they will become the new Palestinians. If not sooner.

Yes, for the first part the Mexican, "Vete a la chingada!" carries it best for me. The rest is tough; I'd go with: "Y métete a tu pedestal!" but I'm still looking.

For us it came out to,, Chingale y su caballo tambien.

But Krisnia is a little embarrassed about these crude epithets, so I may not be getting the real skinny.

She really liked the "Pongalo . . . " though. She was the one who came up with por lado

As a man of few words and few words, I have kinda standardized everything into !Que mierda!, one response for all occasions.
