Assumption of risk. Past practice during the war was hands off foreign residents who were politically neutral/inactive. One of the thorny political beefs that haunted Nic-US relations was the confiscation of property of US citizens. Like the stock brokers say, past performance is no guarantee of future performance, chump.

Assumption of risk. The "year of living dangerously" crap is best for the under 40 crowd.
The older one gets, the less smart it is to be tied down to a 3rd world country with property, etc.

Several gas stations have been closed down by the government. Maybe an op for Pirate to buy them up?

The mill grinds slowly but the grist is fine.

I hope they don't tear down those ChayoPalos at Puerto.Allende. That lot in front could accommodate a huge crowd, and the restaurants could provide dining and dancing afterwards.

    It will not be good if Nicaragua decides to follow Venezuela's example;

Mz - Your identifier looked vaguely familiar - Then I looked at some past posts where we typed.

You still in the land of the not quite right?

    Still up in Alpinas?

Oddly as per a story in ( I think it was) Havana times, only Maduro ville has expressed solidarity with Nicaragua - Others are mincing their words or are outright silent.

Yes bill_bly_ca, still by the lake Apanas. My take on El duende grande post was that this time I believe foreign residents will not be left alone. Since it appears that both countries are taking the same course.

Yes, it could be another South Africa or Zimbabwe. The land seizures during the recent crisis were a head's up. Only here the landowners are pissant expats for the most part. And the host country needs remittances to survive month to month, so both sides have something to lose. What part of Mexican Standoff don't we quite get?

Most of the gringo landholders here have small parcels. Mine is right at 40 acres.

Based on Trump's resentment and actions towards mistreatment of US citizens abroad, it seems unlikely that Ortega will pull that particular tail.

Fraud and theft are likely more imminent problems.

As an aside, a hardware store owner told me she is having problems getting small electrical items imported from Costa Rica. These are sockets, switches, outlet boxes.

I doubt that there is any insidious conspiracy here,, although imports from other CA countries to Nicaragua are down.

I suspect it's more a deficit of financing available to the importer/distributor. He borrows to make the purchase, then pays the loan back with his sales. The way of the world.

Nicaragua is desperately hoping that the Nica Act applies to new loans, and not to those already in the pipe. AND, that the BCIE continues its commitment of $320 million/ year. Given the OAS antagonism towards Nicaragua, and the US position within the OAS, this may be wishful thinking.

When you start adding all these numbers you realize how underwater Nicaragua has been all these years, with donations and loans keeping the Sandis afloat. This is going to sting.

Nicaragua has had no luck placing its various bond issues, and has been talking of raising the interest rate to 10%, a ruinous rate, and shortening the term to 7 years.

These would be extremely attractive terms for sovereign debt -----if the investor thought he had any hope of being paid. Any banker's first question when approached for a loan is,, will the borrower have the resources to pay me back??

In Nicaragua's case, the answer is no.

Like Argentina, Nicaragua will get an IMF bailout,, someday. But not while the Ortega family holds power.

This is a country that was making impressive strides towards pulling it's people out of poverty. Too bad they lost that momentum.

It costs a lot of money to do what Venezuela has done, the irreplaceable and omnipotent difference between Venezuela and Nicaragua and Cuba is just simply oil. Venezuela gots it, and the other two don't. I can't find the link to an article I was reading yesterday about the shale development in the States, but as the situation stands right now WTI could see prices in the $40's all next year according to some analysts, maybe even a tad lower. The US is kicking the shit out of the Arabs in terms of desirable crude, the light stuff for easier refining and is forcing the Arabs to take less money for their oil and exacting a premium for a large amount of the Shale oil coming out.

I mention the above because without some decent oil prices Venezuela isn't worth pissing on. It takes a lot of money, and or committed via indoctrination multitudes, to enact all these crazy socialist/commie deals like land grabs and other democracy killing items. Nicaraguans as a whole are really good a playing a bad hand, and the hoi polloi has done this well the last 10 years in getting lots of government jobs and bennies. I just do not think it is sustainable in order to keep an armed power base in Nicaragua to quell dissent unless there are broad expenditures. If POS & Co. quit paying or pay badly they are gonna be as popular as a bastard at a family reunion.

Right now the mantra of "it is better to be associated with evil and badness and have a full belly and some minutos for facebuk" is in full effect. When those adherents to the previous go hungry and dark it is gonna get interesting. I am convinced that the Nicaraguan military has made a very serious pact with the US in terms of cooperating vs. the dope smuggling and that is why things are being allowed to let ride as they have been, with just barely visible pressure. The chaos that could be, and very likely will be, Nicaragua somewhere down the line is not going to be all that nice. But the upside is that I do believe that after this latest dalliance with the FSLN and dire socialism Nicaragua is gonna be done with both for a long time.

Nica Act may not be biggest problem. Other day was reading something about trade agreements such as CAFTA and Euro ones have clauses about Human Rights. Shut down Zona Francs, they will leave in a minute, no agro exports??

there is always 1) official policy 2) local practice 3) normal thieves. I would hate to own a choice piece of farm or commercial property and wake up one morning to find out the neighbor had just been appointed militia chief. I know what went on during the good times so it is going to get hairier.

The sheer arrogance and stupidity of tres bitches is staggering. A few kids protest march and she orders killings. Nicaraguans will be left with nothing, no dreams and few hopes. Nicaragua's only hope is a quick departure of those two and almost any replacement. At this point, even a military led replacement.

Every picking on the First Lady. It Hillary was here she would blame it all on misogeny or what ever they call in the Beltway. It was a group decisions and no absolute evidence that it didn't start before April 18.

Bad year, canal flopped, INSS when broke, lost silly lawsuit with silly CR, old codgers got beat up and made the news. Best to send some folks abroad to make money to send home.
