An Earthship passive & active solar home in Ontario makes use of 'thermal masses' to save on energy consumption and catches rainwater in cisterns and recycles grey water for indoor food production. A handsome place, made with more than a thousand tires. By a student of the NM architect Michael Reynolds.

    I never met a Semite I didn't like.

This one came up in my feed last week..

Buddy is up by Collingwood (About 2.5 hours from here) which is parallel to mid point of the upper Mi peninsula.

I was gob smacked that he could get something built with our anal building codes. Cool building for sure.

Canadian Cabin youtube guy, Shawn James, goes to visit Dick Proenneke's cabin in Alaska.

One of my goals when I get off the treadmill (18 to 24 months) is to drive to the Yukon and Alaska - Chilo wants nothing to do with that but for me I think in is a must - Espacially the road to Tuk.. Now I am not going to paddle across a massive Alaskan lake to visit his (Proenneke's cabin) but at least drive as close as I can..

You could spend an entire day watching videos that reference Proenneke's cabin in YouTube searches

It is an interesting use of Grid-tie inverter to shave off AC load on the power bill by Jehu .

It is getting close to experiment time for me to start as well. I was going to try 100W ECO-Worthy ($149 cdn each) off of Amazon on Prime day when they dropped to $120 but then stumbled upon a retail/wholesale place on the outskirts of Toronto which have Canadian Solar 240W for $190 CDN (Nasdaq: CSIQ) as their regular price. So I will probably pick up 2 or 3 of those for a 32V tie to a Grid Tie inverter for 600 to 900W peak in and start my solar "Edu-ma-ka-tion"

We pay 6.5, 9.5, and 13.5 cents per kWh for off mid and peak periods with about 1/3 of dollar-cost for power used is additional fees (Transmission, connection, meter, distribution etc etc) , For us between 120 to 150 a month total and I doubt this will make any impact on that bill so it may stay up here, but most likely will be shipped down in a future shipment.

    I am an electrical engineer.
I have a significant background in energy management.
For a variety of reasons, I do not understand anything in this post.
I am almost sure it is in English.
It is unfathomable to me that any of the 5 readers of this web site will understand anything this guy is saying.
Although I only watched half of it, there was no mention of the total costs involved (including batteries) or the savings and believe me, energy management savings are always over rated by 200 % minimum.
    In short....bullshit.

So what buddy is doing is to supplement his power in the house with a grid tie inverter - These types of inverters inject power into a live 120VAC circuit. The incoming sine wave is synced and an output sine wave of the same phase and approximately 1V higher is output. This will lower the draw from the mains. The one in his piece 1s 1KW and they are on Amazon for 180 to 250 each . The battery panel is comprised of hoverboard cells at about $30 a piece. Recently he did a thread on NEMA enclosures at about $210 each. The DC-DC and other boards listed there are from 5 to 12 bucks on ebay .

All in I would say about $1200 is the hardware cost before labour.

So now why - IIUC So-CAL has a 40 cent peak rate from noon to 6PM I do not know if the 40 cents is all in or before fees. Lets say it is fees in - He would have to supply 3Mw of power to get to a break even ROI - 6 hours of power replaced at 1kw = $2.40 a day - So ideal would be a 500 day payback. Now I would cut that be at least 2x if not 3 (Clouds, rain etc etc) which gives a 5 year payback to a zero ROI.

For us up here we have a 20 cent peak all fees in and our peak time is 7 to 10 in winter (3 to 5 in the afternoon) and in summer peak is 9 to 3PM So any ROI up here would take far longer.

I did not factor in solar panels as Buddy already had 4KW of panels on his roof If you were starting fro scratch you would have to add another $1000 for 1KW of solar pannels doubling the ROI time.

His channel is more of a series (Like Young Will Price I have posted previously ) and a lot of tacit knowledge is implied.

Also - While the amount of posters here is low (the 5 to 7 you mentioned) the readership seems to be quite high - Jonh's editorial cartoon thread has over 4500 views as does this one - They seem to go up 75 to 120 a day- Sure some of that is BOT hits, but probably the majority are actual people reading - Maybe even DOS and Rosario read here

    Thanks for the reply.

Sigh......the intelligence, experience, and interest to design, build, and maintain such a system eliminates 90% of the population (in a FIRST world country).
The system cost, availability of utilities willing to buy back electricity at reasonable rates, amount of time needed for design, installation and repair eliminates another 9.999% of the population.

That leaves .001% of the population who (in reality) simply want to install and (more importantly) maintain (diddle with / improve / expand), proudly show their friends, and enjoy such a system. It will break long before the fictional payback period and maintenance is never figured in.

If I ever build on Little Corn (chances are diminishing with age and politics) where electricity is available 10 hours per night at best, I would charge batteries at night and run them down during the day using an inverter to generate AC. Back up is a gasoline generator.

No electricity? No gas? Probably time to get back to the U.S.

Stumbled upon this fellow three weeks ago when he drove a Tesla model 3 for 2500 some miles and calculated the logistics of doing than and the total energy consumed (Equiv to 16 Gal of gas if you were wondering)

In this one he throws a wet blanket on the latest FORD E - F-150 ad showing a tow of 1 million pounds of train stock.

Tossup between Canadian cabin guy and US cabin guy - So I'll do both - Today and Tomorrow.....

Shawn and his Alaska trip to Proenneke's cabin.

Now that I think about it is brilliant - Obviously one of this guy's bucket list items AND since he can meld it in to his channel it becomes viewer funded (via ads) and the entire trip is tax deductible as an expense against his revenues .. Brilliant...

This one came in via YouTube suggested.

    Rosa String Works ..

    This fellow rebuilds stringed instruments.

It is part 1 of 2 - Both being about one hour each.

The Guitar was the customer's father's and was not played for at least 50 yrs.

A really nice watch and my Knowledge of Guitars is greatly expanded - So much that I will probably sit with a few coffees at the guitar shop in Masaya and watch..

    11,250 for a Sweet sounding 2010 F-350 ...

A browse of Social blade shows Westen could have made 168K topside estimate for his work so far so lets rationalize that number to a more realistic $60-80K.. And the year is not done yet.

He's doing good for himself - If you like Mustangs you should see his latest project of a Mustang writeoff rebuild.
