Now living in Nevada he says his taxes are far far less. So it looks like young Will, like the challanged fellow Frinkie I posted some months back, are prime examples on how someone down on their luck can get a leg up if they find the niche...

While I have yet to get a hydro survey on the new plot - I am thinking to go battery / Solar and maybe some small wind. The bylaw (and loosly enforsed bylaw I may ad) stated "Solar collection towers" are unlimited in height. I am guessing 1.5Kw to 2.5Kw of panels and 4Kwh of batteries for both. Have to see what Aduna would do with these cells, have to send at least one cell and one panel in the next box to see what the deal is.

Plus, it sounds like a lot of people send Will free stuff,, which he could quietly sell after he was done with it.

"Brad" brought down a battery from a junked Tesla,, not sure how that is going with him. I'll find out when I get back.
We drove down together and he got endless grief about the "stuff" he was hauling. I had to have my son photo shop his registration document when we went into Mexico,, his flatbed Ford had a 12 ton GVW and the Mexicans deemed it a commercial truck.
No tourist permits for commercial trucks !

Wind: there is plenty of it where I am at. It's not consistent, but neither is the solar. I get a lot of early morning rain forest cloud cover. Some days it rains, I always get something,, some things you can easily forgo,, like TV, washing machine, power tools.
Other things, like the incubator, and the brooder heat lamps,, not so easy.

I've noticed that I (generally) always get some wind as the sun sets and rises. Sometimes, I get a lot of wind, and generally, the wind is at night,, when I most need it. I have a weather station and the wind meter is on a 25 ft tower, which is itself up above the ground on a ten foot high rock outcrop. The weather station measures average and peak wind speeds, and I weren't so lazy I could probably calculate the potential power.

I would put the wind generator on a pole, rising another ten feet above the tower, and brace it laterally to the tower at a couple of points.

The wind is consistently from the NE,, I'm on the down slope of a 5500 ft peak, to the SW, and I DO get wind from that direction,, but rarely.

If I could choose the turbine voltage carefully, I might be able to use my MPPT solar controller to charge the battery. I would have to come up with some means to clamp the voltage,, or divert the current, but that wouldn't be difficult. The controller has a maximum voltage input of 120V. My solar panels are arranged in strings of 3 x 37 VCO, and of course, they are diode protected.

Hydro: Such a beautiful solution. I wouldn't have it all year, but would have it when I needed it, and on an emergency basis. I cold always open a valve for a few hours of hydro rather than starting a generator.
I already have a good sized "lake". And there are plenty of small hydro units available, of every flavor, and not expensive. Common in Vietnam and China,, Alibaba is full of them.

The work of installing the pipe, bringing the wire back up,, significant. I'll die before I finish this farm.

Wind for us may just be x2 400W pole turbines - Logic being when the weather is crap I'd rather have 150 - 300W of "something" (wind) rather than 100% of "nothing" (Solar)

Most wind generators give butt-kiss until 15knt winds anyways...

Typically would not post such a dry stuffy video but this one is of Note.

Explaining computers goes over the points of Win 7 support end _and_ also what that means in the context of the evolution of operating systems - In my Mind the end of Win 7 is actually the end on Microsoft and the OS as utility. Now the OS is the store front (Win 10 Mac OS and Android)

    Star Delta Star ?

The video reminds me of the arguments I had with Fyl as to what is the best transmission voltage for a small scale electrical service.

At the time he was planning for the electrification of CoolTop. And, he needed to pump water from quite a depth.

His thesis was, a DC voltage was better because it more efficiently utilized the transmission line. You always have the voltage, it doesn't cycle through a zero crossover point. At that time you didn't see a lot of hardware that would support his concept, but now with grid tie solar installations, inverters that handle much higher DC voltages are quite common.

Solar panel prices, along with the rest of the hardware, have plummeted in the five or so years since we talked about this.

So,, you string some nominal DC voltage,, such as 192, (Tesla uses 350 - 375 VDC),, among your igloos, still a number you could easily push through Home Depot THHN covered in that ever present black plastic pipe, and daisy chain your igloos to a central solar, wind (Phil had wind), and battery plant.

All you need at each igloo is an inexpensive sine wave inverter,, maybe 2500 watts. And a breaker box for an access point.

I have something similar, a bench that looks north towards the Rio Coco and the mountains of Honduras. If the political system in Nicaragua every resolves itself, there could conceivably be retirees who would enjoy a rural life, cooler weather, and the safety of my farm.

Dealing with 192VDC is NOT going to be fun,, and AC breakers don't work well with DC,, at least not for more than a few interruptions . Nor do AC thermostats work well with DC voltages,, as I found out with my electrical hot water heater. One becomes complacent working with the lower DC voltages common in home solar systems.

Disnorte supposedly has some net metering arrangement whereby I could sell excess power during the day, and draw from the grid at night. A good deal for both of us.

This is Two Hands and a Radio - He had (and I mean had) a really cool channel where he reviewed shortwave radios below (typically) $20 - I had dropped him a few bucks over the last 2 years to help with the cheap radios.

Well with the recent TOS changes to youtube and general lack of traction he has shut it down.

He rambles, but I enjoy, and will miss his ramblings...

When you run the voltage drop calculation apps, you get less of a voltage drop if you choose DC over single phase AC,, but the smallest drop is calculated with a 3 phase source.

Being the lazy sod that I am I go there first, before picking up a pencil.

I use a lot of the #6 aluminum drop cable. I've found copper wire expensive in Nicaragua, and where I am in the north,, the selection is limited. Managua I'm sure has everything. That aluminum drop cable is everywhere,, and cheap.

I bury a lot of it,, can't stand overhead wires anywhere. I pull that cheap black manghera over the wire.
It doesn't have to be a continuous run,, I cut the hose in 100 ft lengths, beyond that the friction is too much
and pull it over the cable,, then close the splices with duct tape, or that 20 mil pvc tape that use for protecting galvanized pipe. That stuff is super sticky.

Was looking for a drone over the Holidays - Found one for a real good price from Bangood (JJRC X6 Aircus) at about 1/2 price and is well reviewed.

You need to be licenced for drones over 250g - the Aircus is 350g - So I have to get my licence. This is going to be fun...
