So that Game Stop rant guy...
He is actually a Mac repair guy (independent) and that is the main focus of his channel.
It goes into the deep rabbit hole of serialization. Mostly it means that you have to have specialized equipment (very specialized)
Now it is not just iPhone- I know of ABS brake controllers in Toyota's that will not work as a replacement unless you have a toyota computer to pair the two. Louis also discusses a case where a valve on a tractor could not be replaced because computers in the tractor ask the valve what serial number it is to work.
Really interesting subtext to being able to fix your own stuff..

I didn't know that.
There have been some interesting attempts to lock buyers into dealers.
I remember one time when you couldn't buy VW parts unless you were a dealer.
That really opened up the market for independent parts manufacturers.
I purchased a muffler once for my VW bus that was made in South Africa.
Every self-respecting hippie had a well-thumbed copy of Zen and the Art of VW Repair
A lot of that goes away in the US, eventually, in response to lawsuits, but in other countries,, not so much.
It's whatever the big company can get away with.
Long term they lose in the more enlightened countries,, and pay some settlement and attorney fees, but short term,, the profits must sustain the calculus. In other places, they probably pay someone to maintain the status quo
In many African countries, and numerous others, you still cannot get a license for an upscale Xerox machine unless the machine is on Xerox service. The license expires annually,, and they simply will not renew it. For any price.
The software simply stops working.
They use Flex LM, an algorithm almost impossible to crack unless you have the source code.
Interestingly there are still some analog TV stations still on the air.

This Swedish fellow has been a very good reference for getting started.
In this video he lays out a nice simple evolution of why PCs are how they are in the first 15 min. The last 10 min goes over the next architectures for IoT (Smart toaster, fridge etc etc) and RISC V

Ah IMAX
In Sept of 1989 I took a contract position with IMAX - The project was called "Solido" and it was a domed screen 3D film with LCD glasses to give the viewers a stunning all around 3D film experiance.
My Job was testing the LCDs for optical performance (Many NA and Japan suppliers) , some reflectivity testing of screen material as requested and general joe jobs.
It also lead to me meeting Chilo when the glasses were manufactured in Kitchener, where we still live today.
The projector has film enter at a rate that is faster than spin of the drum- The slack is then taken up by by cams which snap the frame in place infront of the gates. The shutters are counter rotating whipper snappers @48 hs to minimize the perception of strobing.
This projector has 2 x 15kw bulbs - The Solido projector had dual 17.5KW bulbs - They were ran by Miller (unfortunatly of fortunatly named) 666 welder bricks at about 1000lbs each. I think it was 36V at something like 500A once the gas was ionised. Our projector was also one that was raised to the cieling and projected from the center of the cinima.
Worked with a fantastic Aussi, Gerry Carter, for one year of the 18 months I was there.

You didn't mention if it worked or not . . . .
Oh Yea - I am told the projector has moved twice and now resides in France. It ran flawlessly for all of Expo 90 in Osaka and then moved to a location to Fujitsu (The company that sponsored the pavilion) and then to the EU
Right now it is here I am told... Futuroscope
I wonder if my two broken taps are still in there.. There was also a plaque with all of the people who worked on the project. Not sure if that is still on it.
They eventually sold 30 or 40 of the film set ups I am told. The concept (LCD glasses and alternating right left images) was patented by Lenny Lipton, Author of Puff the Magic Dragon..
One of the Engeneers met him in the patent negotiations and said he was certainly "Fried" by the 60's and 70's
