Default Re: Google News, November 8, 2019

The recent news of the 6 Mormon children & 3 women killed & burned by sicarios in Mexico makes me thankful that Nicaragua, tho once part of Mexico, is not a narco-state. Perhaps thanks is really owed the Sandinista ‘brotherhood’ for managing to keep the drug lords from controlling this little republic of volcanos, big fresh-water lakes and poor people. Mexico is practically a failed state. Consider that some 17,000 people there were killed between January and June of this year, more than the “civilian death toll in Iraq at the height of war in 2006”.

The flood gates to the mega-market for drugs in the USA opened wide with NAFTA that then president Salinas pushed Washington to pass with record-setting lobbying expenditures. Old man Bush got the ball rolling, but Clinton signed it into law. (I voted for Perot.) The US Congress was curiously split on the agreement, but not at all along party lines like today’s split politics. It was a question of money, who profited, or who represented those who would profit most.

Throughout Latin American history dictatorships have been the most successful form of governance. The main difference between the Somoza dynasty and the incipient Ortega dynasty is that the Somozas whistled to America’s tune. As economic pressures are increased to bend or break this government, perhaps it’s time we take stock of what they’re doing that works for the greater good. Nicaragua is not Venezuela. Sure they’re more like Cuba, but there are differences. Nicaragua never had nukes aimed at the USA (OK, we’d cut a deal with the Ruskies). DOS stepped down from power in 1990 (OK, after a civil war we funded - Cuba couldn’t be penetrated; Fidel became the permanent dictator-godhead). When DOS wheedled his way back on top, the core Sandinistas kept many of the neocon changes to the economy, and, for a while, Nicaragua flourished, TVs, cars, roads. But all politicians everywhere are greedy no-accounts. And people are better informed than ever. So when INSS was about to tank, some revolted, many protested. (There are no mass protests in Cuba.) Sure DOS spouts anti-yanqui-imperialism, but he’d welcome back global industrialists looking to pay pauper wages to Nica peons, now that he can insure stability. Of course they won’t come if Uncle Sam says, “No guarantees” and “only people we like can profit in our marketplace.”
