Panama and Honduras are hard hit by covid. CR doing well but wants to stay that way. Can't see land borders opening up soon, although CR and Panama are still trying to send 100 illegals per day on foot. No idea of 7 day notice BS, but it would be another obstacle. Panama going to let some planes fly soon, but doubt Nic will be a big priority--too few flyers plus Cudies.

Herd immunity is a pipe dream, even here. Enough people are trying to stay safe to slow the spread but the casualties will be horrible.

MINSA reports for the week ending 6/2/20, there have been a total of 1,118 cases of coronavirus in Nicaragua. 46 have died of CoV-19 or as La Prensa reports Rosario Murillo puts it for 22 funcionarios y militantes they have «hicieron el tránsito a otro plano de vida».
370 Nicas have totally recovered but 702 are active cases (none are listed as critical, which does not necessarily mean zero).
The official covid-19 death toll translates to 7 deaths per million. (Pop.= 6.6 million)

Cause of death of my friends father was listed on the government document as congestive heart failure. Which was probably technically right, I guess. I understand it was a very unpleasant ending for a good and decent man. In the end the Sandi's that he always detested got him by omission.

I hear from a credible source that the hospital in Esteli has covid cases in isolation. The doctors and nurses that treat them are isolated during the shift and then have to shower, change clothes, and are driven home in a disinfected car. At least one of the cigar factories is working 3 shifts instead of one to spread people apart and some have been sent on vacation if they had vacation time.

What ever the death certs say, there should also be a separate log of those who died as a result of covid although that will often be a judgement call. Sweden apparently lists anyone with covid in the last 30 days of life as a covid death, which would pad the totals a little. Comparing total deaths to the previous year is another way to estimate it.

No shortages or disruptions I can see. We are early on the curve for covid and records have been flakey but worse is to come, reported or not reported.

Here’s a quick breakdown for North America. Note that 6,000/M = 0.6%, is less than 1%. Clearly the spread of the coronavirus in any population after 3 months is much, much greater. Many are asymptomatic or have suffered a bad flu without becoming a “case”.
    6/2/20_____Cases/M _____deaths/M
    USA _______5,686 _______ 327
    Canada ____ 2,450 _______ 196
    Mexico ______725 ________ 79
    Dom. Rep.___1,638 _______ 48
    Panama ____ 3,211 _______ 80
    Honduras ____542 ________ 22
    Guatemala ___298 _________ 6
    Cuba _______ 185 _________ 7
    El Salvador __ 409 _________ 7
    Nicaragua ___ 169 _________ 7
    Haiti ________ 195 _________4
    Costa Rica ___217 _________ 2
    Belize ________45 _________ 5
From mortality statistics for the USA, there are 717 deaths/M per month on average. For Nicaragua, there are 422 deaths/M per month on average. It blows my mind that the normal death rate per thousand in Nicaragua is lower than it is in the USA. They crossed in 1987. See https://data.worldbank.org/indicator...ocations=US-NI

Could the big city homicides in the USA be driving up death rates ?

Baltimore, Maryland. The murder rate in Baltimore is 51 per 100,000
So you divide the 51 by 10 to get per million, then rinse and repeat for another of the 25 worst Democratic cities

Drug overdose deaths account for another 67,000 US deaths.
There are 800,000 heroin users in the US,, at least there were before COVID did some house cleaning.

A bigger problem is probably the accuracy of the reporting modality. That 717 442 is big difference

No. Look at the plot of the death rates from 1960 to 2018 for the two countries,
    https://data.worldbank.org/indicator...ocations=US-NI
You'll see the death rate in the USA hasn't changed much, but it's dropped a lot for Nicaragua from 1960 to 2000.

And to think death rates are used as a measure of the quality of a country's health care system. Leaves me wondering.

Reports of 15 passing away in the hospital in Masaya after a power failure - While the reports do not say so explicitly, I speculate it would be ventilator shut down with the loss of power.

    " . . NYT:
    BREAKING NEWS
The medical journal The Lancet has retracted a controversial study that concluded that hydroxychloroquine was dangerous for Covid-19 patients.
    Thursday, June 4, 2020 3:45 PM EST
The authors of a sensational paper that last month reported dismal findings about the use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to treat Covid-19 patients have retracted their report after the data that it was based on was called into question.
The paper, published in The Lancet in May, led to the suspension of some clinical trials of the medications, including by the World Health Organization. (Some have since resumed.)

So, the Lancet decided that truth was more important than bashing Trump ?
Even more surprising that the NYT thought it newsworthy

My understanding of it's biggest help is enabling zinc to pierce the Covid rna envelope.
    The zinc kills the virus.

Zinc has been used forever as an over the counter remedy for common colds,,
which I understand are corona viruses.

I'M NOT a big vitamin, supplement, guy.
I don't think the majority HURT >>> more than your pocketbook, unless you overdo it, but there are certainly anecdotal accounts of many helping. Some are toxic in excess,, like Vitamin D.

Diet and life style are a big factors here, if you get plenty of protein, green vegetables, and fresh fruits, some sunshine, fresh air and exercise, and avoid stress,, you're probably OK.

But,, who does get etc,, etc,,, etc ? All year ?
Lots of things get in the way.

I read the mounting objections to the paper - worldwide & overwhelming. France stopped their trials as a result of the 'study'. Turns out they had used dosages greater than the FDA LD50 (lethal dose for half). All recognized Big Pharma's heavy hand. There are too many real success stories of people fending off the virus with Cl-quin + Zn, and using azithromycin if it advances to affect the lungs. But what fat cats will make billions with cheap old stand-by meds? A health crisis involving millions of ordinary dolts is a marketing opportunity, as well as a chance for some major political power plays. Time to capitalize. The virus came from communist China, true. But the capitalist world is making a damned poor showing of itself on this pandemic world stage.

The NYT prints a lot of liberal bullshit and is lopsided with rabid never-Trumpers, but if you can mentally tip-toe past all the cowshit, you can find some top-quality gems. Too many people today only want to read what supports their thinking - they've given up on learning something new.

The 'silent majority' reads and votes.

Can't help you with George Floyd.
Something I didn't see in press accounts. The cop, Chauvin, who kneed Floyd to death, moonlighted as a security guard. During this last year, both these guys, Floyd & Chauvin, worked at the same Minneapolis Latin nightclub as bouncers. That they had had some history together changes this whole scenario of an isolated incident of a bad cop killing some random black suspect, IMO.

Nonetheless pent-up frustration from the pandemic lockdown had to get release somehow, one way or the other. Why not a broken liberal cause like BLM, as tho the entire history of the USA hasn't wrestled with race-relations. (And been enriched by it.) Unfortunately, the explosive release of all those locked up, energetic Americans had to be directed at some target, a scapegoat, and naturally, that was el numero uno, our president.

Ironically, the most racist nation on the planet, Han China, will advance as we auto-destruct.
