Fishing info

Hello from Chiquilistagua,

I am new to this site and am not sure how this all works, but the main reason I joined is to see if I could get some current info on fishing in Nicaragua. I have my own canoe, and love to paddle around local lakes and streams casting a few spinners about in search of the big one.
Has anyone fished Ometepe recently? I saw some old posts but nothing recent. So come on, you sportsmen, or sportswomen, give me the skinning on where they are biting.

Most of my fishing has been in the Caribbean, however I did fish for a few days on the Rio San Juan river for tarpon (primarily).
Rio San Juan is full of large tarpon. There is probably nobody fishing it in these times except for sustenance.
A "big one" in this case could be a 200-300 pound fish, so arrange your tackle accordingly.
A 250 pound tarpon could make for quite an adventure in a canoe and provide you with a 2-3 day tour of a lot of southern Nicaragua.....
Look for old posts from Fishercigarman ....he fished some of the lakes you mention as well.

One of my favorite rivers until recently has been the Sapoa in southern Nicaragua, very close to Costa Rica. It was full of Machaca and at the right time of the year, nice guapote. The machaca can run up to six or eight pounds, and they fight like a smallmouth. These are "big ones" to me. Sadly, in recent years, since it runs out of Costa Rica, the water vegetation has increased by 500 percent, so it seems to me somebody is dumping something into the river upstream. The fish population has plummeted! So sad! It was and still is a beautiful river; ;unbelievable bird and animal life. My wife just loves this place.
Most of the local lagoons are fun. Apoyo is just magical, but continues to be popular and beginning to be "overgrown" with cabins and lodges. El Tigre Lagoon, on the way to Leon, is great fishing, but it is a bear to get to. This is the reason it is still a good fishing lake. I have had my canoe in the Sabalos River near Rio San Juan. This is another fine river and good fishing, but the access is also rough. I have been looking at Lake Apanas in northern Nicaragua. It is famous for its good fishing, and I am planing to go up and have a look.

What does Lake Apanas have for fish ?
I'd like to stock my "lake" but don't want trash fish.
Guapote would be OK.

I'm not a fan of that square foot, permaculture, dirt bag construction, Never Trumper fish, tilapia:
tasteless and mealy.

I'll probably have to kill or at least reduce the turtle population first.

All the fishing info is very dated! Over ten years is some cases. I am interested in fishing the area around Merida, Ometepe. I visited this area a few weeks ago, and it looks great. It is on the west side of the island, so the wind is not so strong. It is also rather secluded, as the road in this area is poor and the area is not so built-up. There are several hotels that are relatively cheap and I can park my car there. I am waiting for the rain to let up a little, then I will give this area a try.
