Storm off S. America with a weird trajectory--straight at central Nic. Kinda like the rio san juan hurricane a couple years ago. Projection then jumps to Pacific and hits S. Mexico.

Right now for the mountains it looks like a quick clouds and drizzle storm from late Fri thru Sat, then off to the Pacific. Watches out for the Atlantic coasts of Nic and CR. I sand bagged my porton because our flooding comes from Mt. Quiabuc and can sneak up on us without warning.

Been watching it all week, finally over open water, 5am update still showing it to be tracking a bit southerly. Islands are no doubt going to see some weather and way it it tracking they will be on the windy side of the storm.

My roof is in bad need of replacement, not the zinc itself ( replaced in 6-7 yrs ago) as much as the roof framing. The wood was crap when I put it up 15yrs ago but was all I could get, had wood worms in it and various people I have had staying in the house last few yrs have neglected to fight off the "Wood Lice" (Termites), so they been feasting.

Plan to go back with metal roof framing and be done with it, but not something I want to undertake from afar, so fingers crossed the roof stays onto the house, at least a bit longer.

The Hurricanes are a mixed blessing, got my Adjusting Licences re-instated this last week after yrs of dormancy. Did a little Hurricane Gig last yr when Ida hit the Gulf Coast, tested the waters.

Kind of scary seeing a Hurricane in Nica this early, we are usually all about the late season. Historically the "Big" ones have hit in Late October - November. Have seen them as late as Thanksgiving.

Fingers crossed that the roof makes it to fight another day, guess will know 1 way or another by this time manana.

I looked at a radar map yesterday afternoon. Not a cloud over Nicaragua. The storm looked to be heading straight on.
I'm in Managua, dry and clear. Some high, light clouds but no indication of rain.

The storm had no circulation, moving fast. Unless it stalls, unlikely that it will develop into anything serious.

The Cine across from the Crowne Plaza had Top Gun Maverick but only one showing at 5;10
Had to settle for Return to Jurassic Park.
Theatre was freezing, bring a jacket.
Tickets were less than $5 , as in US the popcorn and Pepsi cost more than the movie tickets

I ponder the recently announced change in its Covid-requirement to enter Nicaragua Simply, if fully 'vaccinated', no PCR test (within 72 hrs of arrival) is required.

Fully-vaccinated? What’s it matter to the country who welcomed the pandemic with an Amor-en-Tiempo-de-Covid parade? Clearly they won’t be getting any kick-backs from Pfeiser or Moderna. Besides it’s likely that few/none of the vaccines given here are their hit_&_miss m-RNA-type. Do they actually believe that those vaccinated cannot catch, spread or die from covid, in its multiple varieties, contrary to current medical knowledge?

I suspect it’s to express solidarity with the ongoing internal Marxist takeovers of North America (bajo control del Zombi Mandarino & el hijo de Fidel) that continue to insist on mandating bad/ineffective medicine as a show of total power over the effete nationalists. Es decir, viva la revolucion!

Each country has its list of approved wuflu shots. Nic accepts just about every one. Cancelling of Russia has stopped approval of Sputnik by WHO which kinda sucks for Nicas and others with that shot who want to travel. At least we missed almost the whole dog and pony show here with no shutdowns, etc. I wonder if we will ever get stats that with no internal shut downs we had m/l the same death rates as the neighboring countries that had expensive shutdowns up the kazoo.

Pleasant light rain up north, projection 2 or 3 cm for today with wind peeking at 11am.
Nasty zone goes from Nicoya to Granada at this moment. Made it to tropical storm, will probable get worse as it hits the Pacific.

No wind in Leon. Zero. Clearly not a tropical storm; no incipient hurricane. NOAA got it wrong. A curious meteorological phenomenon. Apparently - from what passed over us last nite - a stagnant mass of hot, low pressure air encircled by a curtain of cool, windless rain that formed on the coast of Venezuela and barely moved north under the weak tropical coriolis effect while the earth moved (W to E) Nicaragua under & through it.

We are regressing to our conventional pattern, clear in the morning (I was charging at 42 A x 55 V at 8AM this morning).

The day generally has high overcast, and at some point in the afternoon,, generally about 4PM, it starts to rain.
It will often continue through the night.

When I lived in San Jose,, a similar pattern occurred.
It would begin to rain pretty consistently every afternoon about 2PM

Clearly,, the tropical waves disrupt the pattern, or perhaps,, feed the pattern.
The moisture in the air and ground rises in response to the heat from the sun during the day,
and then condenses and falls again as rain when the atmosphere cools

The temp stays around the high 60's or low 70's, making it perfect for getting stuff done.
The temp drops a bit at night,, but not much. Maybe to low mid 60's

I just checked the weather for Little Corn Island for the next 2 days, every 3 hours.
The temperature varied between 81 and 82 degrees....morning, noon. and night.
I find this to be astounding.

Reminds me of a year when we had so many little zancudos that the Minsa inspector was amazed but at least she said they were no the disease carrying species. Roads dry, standing water in all the low spots. Light frog singing at times. At 0730 in my office 23 degrees, 73%. "perpetual spring" to some newbs but sinisitus weather to some locals. Fly season, too.

There is supposed to be dengue in Condega, but who can you believe here ?

We have no zancudos on the farm. Hard to believe,, but true.
When it gets hot, we have "mosquitos", usually in the shade, no see-ums, but repellent deters them nicely.

We have a tiny flying black bug that doesn't bite but gets into ears, nose, and eyes.
All our flies have mostly left,, perhaps for better dog shit pickings in Esteli?

It was swat, swat,, swat for a few days there. ENOZ is a fly swatter par excelence, but I've never seen it here.
The plastic ones they sell don't work at all. ENOZ is available on Amazon. They last forever.


I spent the better part of today at the spring. Several large trees had fallen,, the super saturated ground and a bit of wind.
One landed on top of the spring cover, and damaged a sheet of zinc. I wanted to re-do the cover anyway.
I'd like to completely seal the spring box, which is about 8 x 8 x 4.
Surrounding the spring box on two sides are large broken rocks, which facilitate the water passage and help block silt.
They eventually plug up and have to be pulled out and cleaned.

The floor of the spring box is covered with piedrin which helps trap the silt as well.
It would only need a thorough cleaning once yearly if it were completely sealed.

I negotiated an easement (servidumbre) with the owner of the parcel towards the direction of water flow.
I have an additional four meters, and we discovered another spring while clearing off the fallen trees on his property.
$100 plus some chain saw diplomacy.

The owner doesn't use the water, he lives in Venecia.
He grows some coffee on the parcel.

I'm going to do some selective tree felling to open the area around vital infrastructure.
Those trees are massive and could cause some serious damage.

In the pic you can see where the water is flowing at the right bottom,, approximately a gallon per minute.
It should be flowing across the entire wall.
Pulling the filter rocks is a job best done in April or May.



Fyl lives on in our hearts, or at least by merit of the presence of his coffee roaster which I bought from him 7 or 8 years ago.
I've managed to keep it going with careful attention to the drum bearings,, the burner, and cleaning it routinely.


We generally roast a dozen pounds at a time, four runs.


We've had some beautiful days recently.

Back home we got so much marsh land that out state's bird is th mosquito. They've got a gentle touch and take their sweet time plumbing a vein, but their appetite is such that they could collapse it. The horse or deer flies are particularly nasty; they chomp into you upon landing and leave welts that itch like hell.

Here in Leon, we too are plagued with the no-see'ems or gnats (when nit-pickin', the nit on a gnat's nut is the limit of futility). Here the locals call 'em sayukes. They land in your eyes & nose and if you dare talk they'll coat your tongue and take deep dives in your throat. Smoke a puro. After Bonnie there don't seem to be any around.
