Those C-46s were only about 30 years old then. That’s similar in age to the Short 360s that fly there now.
I may be mistaken, it's been a while,, but I think those were the military "commuter" planes I used to fly in while I was in Europe.
This was early 60's, we still had a lot of presence in Europe. It wasn't quite a scheduled airline service,, but very close.
Free, as long as there was a seat available.
Then jump on a train to your final destination.
In Italy the trains were ALMOST free to American service personnel.
They would build your ticket out of foolscap paper with a glue pot and a brush.
Flew the precursor a... DC-3..... from the Abaco Islands to Miami once.
One of our kids had a box full of hermit crabs in his lap and turbulence knocked it to the floor.....hermit crabs went everywhere.
I think this defines cluster f**k.
Passengers were good about helping in the roundup though.
