    Default Stephen Kinzer Booksigning Canceled

Stephen Kinzer, author of Blood of Brothers, has had to cancel his trip to Nicaragua. He will not be at El Gato Negro in San Juan del Sur on January 5th.

If you know someone who was planning to come to the signing, please spread the word that it has been canceled.

Just finished reading this book and highly recommend it! An excellent first person history of the events of the revolution and the civil war. I would go as far as to call it "required reading" for anyone looking to visit or live in Nicaragua at any point. I have read a lot of the history of Nicaragua and this book filled in many of the spaces and gave me valuable insight and understanding into the mindset of the Nicaraguan people and all that they have suffered and why they handle things the way they do. It has been an excellent compliment to the cultural knowledge I have gained by other readings, by having lived in Nicaragua and by having married into a Nica family. Kinzer has made every effort to present the facts without taking sides and leads the reader to consider that all that happened in the 70's and 80's would have been "business as usual" in Nicaraguan history and politics, if it hadn't become a scenerio for the US and the Soviet Union to act out their cold war aggressions. Well written and well presented.

After reading his articles in the eighties and later his book, I never found Kinzer particulary objective. He does good research on events long past, not so good on present events that he's
around for. Seems to always dig holes in one direction. He's a good writer though so I'm sure I'll also read his latest book.

You can try this one. http://www.amazon.com/Life-Hard-Mach.../dp/B003BNZJ1I

I found it a bit "dated" but very good cultural insights. It is probably available at the library so you might not have to buy it.
