Default Bluefields Fishing Tournament Final Results

The Oasis International Fishing Tournament concluded in Bluefields on Saturday evening with Atlantic Coast residents taking first place in the three top categories. Victor Lau held on to take first place with his 107 pound tarpon after a strong challenge from Jaime Alejandro Lopez from Managua who boated a 70 pound tarpon on the final day of the competition and a last minute chalenge by Bluefields resident and former champion Blaine Kendler who placed third with a sixty five pound entry. This year virtually every boat hooked a tarpon but as they say at the docks, there was a a lot of crying about the one that got away. Over five thousand dollars in cash and prizes were awarded this year to participants, including five hundred dollars to the best Sportsman to Mario Garcia Castillo who is battling health problems and still came out to fish.

Garry Lassesne who works on Corn Island with La Isla Group won the Open category with his 28 pound barracuda, the prize he won is a free weeks lodging at Casa Canada. This is Garry's second year in the tournament and he claims that his win was all about strategy. Enough fish tales for one weekend Garry! Jim Boyle from Corn Island, Gary's fishing partner won a new Suzuki motor scooter at the raffle, which he also claims was a tactical win.
Rosa Poteet who operates along with her husband Randy, Casa Rosa fishing Lodge took first place in the Ladies division with nice jack just ahead of Jacqueline Ibarra of Managua. A tip for those who are fishing next year, Rosa is one of the best fishing guides in Nicaragua and she has been in the money every year. Our bet is that she or her husband Randy take first place next year.
First place for the snook category was taken by Ronald Allen who came from the U.S. to fish with the Casa Rosa teams and second place honors were won by Wiliam Zack also with Casa Rosa.
The Jack Crevalle division was won by Ronald Chang, one of the transplanted Bluefields residents who returned from Miami to fish the tournament and has promised to come back next year and help organize sponsorship in the states.
This was by far the best tournament in the history of the event. The big difference was the community participation with the Kayuko sailboat races and art show sponsored by Dr. Henry Bacon. Plus there were several hundred people out on the Municipal dock for the weigh in on both fishing days.
We want to thank every participant and the city of Bluefields for their generous support of the tournament. At the closing ceremony Auto Nica and Suzuki Marine represented by Alvaro and Rudy Sandino donated a high pressure portable water pump to the Bluefields Fire Department and the Oasis Hotel is donating the proceeds of the entry fees to the Bluefields Red Cross for this years Plan Playa for Semana Santa.
There is a lot of interest in a new tournament in Sepember of this year on Corn Island and serious organizing plans are under way.

Sounds like a good excuse to make some T-shirts! What'll be the name of the team? The Real Nicaragua Extreme Team?

    Marlies,
How about a locals kingfish tournament on the island during the month of August or September to test the water? As I recall the weather is not bad and there are always lots of kingfish around the island. Even Merle might join in for that one.

    Default Nice Pic marlies

Lets get the Team together ahead of time,so we can make certain We participate next year.
I think ideally We could name it 'The RealNicaragua.com" team,to give the site recognition/exposure.
Once we decide on the Team I will be Glad to sponsor Columbia Fishing shirts for the Team Members, embroidded with TRN logo.
Lets hear, who else is interrested in fishing it,besides marlies and I,so we can get a Team Committed.

Columbia shirts would be outstanding, broder! I think they'd be a hot sale item beyond just a fishing tournament.

    Default Furthermore...

    I suggest:

Should the TRN Team win ANY place, the proceeds should go to the "Miskito Alan fund" Since You mentioned Sale of the Shirts...
I could throw in a couple of the Actual Tournament shirts,to be sold for,Marisol's fund raising purposes.
I am willing to go on Record here at our good ole TRN,to pay the Team's Entry FEE and the first round of FDC or Tonas for that matter.

Lets get a freaking team together, let's do it folks.

Ideally I'd love to fish with:
    1)marlies( and husband if interrested)
2)My olde pal LFJW,buddy if Ya got the time,I will cover ALL expenses for ya .
    3)LCT
    4)cookshow
    5) Mupitara

    Now,lets hear it,from the above,mentioned,after all,it's for a great cause!!

Count me in! I'm also trying to put together a "corn island" team for next year... As for Merle, uh, LFJW is probably the only one who might be able to convince him to participate in "sport" fishing for "charity."

I'm good.... just tell me when!

I highly suspect there is a very good sportfishing environment about 10-15 miles southeast of Big Corn and would love to find out. I'm thinking Sails, Blues, and Wahoos.

Hell, we don't need a tournement, just a gathering.
    Life's different here ... It's a whole 'nother pace.

    Default Hey...

Speakin of swordfish .... has anyone tried it in Nicaragua. It is huge here in Florida. But you gotta fish at night with big squid and cayalume sticks in deep water, like 300-1,000 feet. Takes substanitial gear too ... no hand lines as these bad boys get big!

    Yummy!

I think they are here, I see no reason for them NOT to be, no one has looked, but I have in 1200 feet of water caught some nice yellow fin tuna as a by catch...not great big, but big enough. Another one that I really love to eat...Truely Chicken of the sea...

The date for the 2009 tournament is the, 26th, 27th and 28th of February. Captains party and tournament rules meeting at six pm on Thursday the 26th. Friday the 27th is the first day fishing with lines in the water no earlier than six am. Day one weigh in commencing at four pm, we also are giving a prize for the largest fish at the dock on day one. There will be an art show and a shrimp cooking contest as well for those who over indulge the FDC and remain behind on day one. The 28th is a full fishing day with an awards ceremony and banquet that evening.

The fishing in Bluefields this year despite the north wind has been excellent and some monster snook have been caught. For the Floridians who can not buy snook at restaurants and fish markets, it is a delicacy that is worth the trip alone. We think that the conditions will be perfect for the tournament this year.
Please book your rooms early this year! You can reserve on line at www.oasiscasinohotel.com, for photos of last years tournament and the rules you can can check www.fishbluefields.com .
By the way Marlies, I think I have Merle convinced to fish this year and for sure Cookshow will be there to arbitrate (in true Corn Island fashion) any disputes regarding the largest fish.
You'll excuse me, gentlemen. Your business is politics, mine is running a saloon.
