Default Fair Trade: Spreading The Wealth

"Now some of us have floors, some furniture, sanitary services, and potable water. If we sold all of our production at Fair Trade prices, our dreams would come true."
    - Alexa Marin Colindres, coffee farmer, Nicaragua

Just like my óle late tobacco farmer uncle back home said... if you have the prettiest stuff to offer, you get the best price...Somehow Dan some seem to forget, you get out of life what your put into it....

    Default Don't disagree with

your post. I see fair trade as a way for the producer to get his/her fair share from the system by working within it. If they can get a bigger share of the final price for the product by being proactive, then that to me is how the system should work.

I support fair trade! in past times some of these farmers would sell their coffee at unfair prices, I think the farmers across the world deserve a little more appreciation, it is because of them We have food to eat.

This is what I love (and also makes me sad) about Nica people... la gente es humilde! Compare this woman's aspirations to the average person in the USA or Europe. It reminds me of my Nica mother in law... has never had anything (by my standards) but is seldom without a smile, a good attitude and always giving thanks to her God. She often has reminded my of a "mother bird". My wife and I would often bring her some kind of "treat" back from a trip to Granada or Masaya ( and candy bar or cup cake, etc) and she always breaks it up into tiny pieces to share with whomever else is in the house, her kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews. Nobody got much, but everybody got some. Me.. I would have "hoarded" the treat for myself and eaten it all. I know it's a small thing but it's these types of "small things" that I have seen over and over again in my experience in Nicaragua that has changed me and my perspective in life.
