The one I've had my eye on is a Yamaha CG171SF, which sells for $350-360.

Fours strokes per measure, or three for a waltz.

I'm returning in a month or so to pick up a couple of guitars I left Don Tapia in charge of. I will be staying for a little while, Just wanted to hear a couple opinions on any great instructors for classical and flamenco playing. Location is not a problem, but please keep it within a 200km radius from managua.

Does Pilarte have guitars in stock or does he custom make them like Zepeda such that you have to return to pick them up? I am trying to decide whether to take a trip out there and I don't have 2 weeks to wait to pick up a guitar. However, if he stocks some, then it would be worth the trip. I would love to pick up a guitar while I'm here (Managua, Masaya, Granada) so if anyone has other suggestions for places to look in the towns I mentioned, I would be grateful.

Pilarte had quite a few hanging in the shop, including some steel string models and some electric-acoustics.

Zepeda didn't have much in stock.

I doubt if they take credit cards because of the high fees for CC here and in CA in general. Bring cash or plan on paying a $5 ATM fee plus 3-5 percent based on your credit card company. Since I live here I just consider the fees as part of the cost of living. I still pay large bills here by check issued from my USA account and the companies that take the checks are willing to wait for the checks to clear vs the credit card fees.

I have no idea. I haven't had a credit card since the first Bush administration.

I realized what a ripoff they were and cut it up. They still keep telling my I'm pre-approved!

I used my credit cards down south with no problem at all. Petro stations, liquor, dentist office, etc., but that was in Esteli, Managua, and SJDS.

    No way in Puerto Cabezas.

Speaking of PC, remember that ladrones stole my luggage last year? In my luggage, I had photocopies of my debit cards and credit cards in the event that I lost or someone stole my wallet, I could call and cancel them.

Went to the casino yesterday and for tax purposes, I get money at the casino so that my winnings are counter balanced. The ATM would not give me any money.
I called my bank. The girl said that I had exercised my limit on my debit card for the day. No way Jose!

The thieves from Nicaland were charging me up from Oregon to Houston. Today I haven’t a card in me pocket….until I receive new ones. I don’t know how they did it without my pin and the numbers on the reverse side, but they have their way.

My aunt stayed for a month and a half about 4 months ago. She went swipe-aholic but she knew her budget. She expected to be overdrafted about 3 or 4 hundred dollars the most. Im not shitting you, She came back and her account was over-drafted $700,000 dollars and change. I don't know if it was a joke or something but I called her bank, placed her info and that's the number I got just to make sure. We were laughing so hard cause we couldn't believe how much credit Bank of America actually gave her. My point, Cash all the way...

Just for the record for future travelers, Zepeda accepts credit but gives a better price for cash and Pilarte takes only cash.

I am almost positive that one of the clerks at "La Union" on Car. a Masaya in Managua coppied my info about 2 years ago and sold it in that big credit card scam that was going around Nicaragua. I had U$1000 dollars worth of charges on the card in Brazil (charges from Gas Stations to McDonalds, how one eats U$300 dollars worth of McD's is beyond me!), so my bank canceled the card.

Can you use those Visa gift cards in Nicaragua - the ones with a fixed amount of money? That would prevent things like this.

I got a Visa Gift Card a couple of weeks ago, and in the fine print it said something about being valid in the USA. Makes me think it wouldn't work here but I haven't tried it.

I went to Zepeda's shop in 2007 to get a custom classical guitar made. The thing turned out horrible. The fretboard edges were so sharp and uncomfortable to hold, the lacquer wasn't properly applied and the guitar sounded almost lifeless. The frets were also the cheapest I had seen. Lots of glue sticking out and really ugly metal. The tone was not rich at all. I don't think he made the guitar though, it was probably made by his employees.

Got rid of it a few days after I picked it up. Not a happy customer.

In the end, It doesn't matter to me if they accept credit cards, debit cards, Gift cards, checks, money orders, bank transfers, cows or chickens. As long as they make me a Good guitar, thats all that counts.
