Vicente Fernandez - Worth the price of admission??

Chilo has found out that Vicente Viagara.. opps my bad.. Fernandez is playing Toronto (Skydome) in Dec.. The tickets are outrageous in $$$ but I said she could go.. ( I am not, but I will be taxi driver for the group I am told )

The reason I ask is that Boukies (bad spelling) and Pablo Montero have also been up here and she was disappointed with those shows to an extent and their cost was not even 1/3 of the cost of this old.... um .. er distinguished singer ..

Chente gives some of the best if not the BEST performances hands down!!!
my wife paid almost $300 bucks to go see him and his son in concert in Miami.

I am not a personal fan of Rancheras,but Vicente Fernandez is Extremely popular in Latin America.

He promises each audience that he'll sing until they are tired, making his concerts last from two and a half to four hours. I've been thinking of the metaphor all day. I'm not a big fan of Elvis, but I do like a lot of his tunes. I would pay at least $500 to see him live if the opportunity was there, so long as he could put on a good show. The same goes for James Brown. I'd pay twice that to see Willie Nelson, but I don't have to because he still keeps it accessible to the masses. I paid $150 for really good seats to see Jimmy Buffet a few years ago in San Diego and it was worth every penny.

If you don't know mariachi (they call it Ranchera here), you may not get Vicente Fernandez. It's very emotional music and worth taking the time to learn. Back in the late 90s, I was doing a lot of trips for medical conferences. Along with those conferences there were always a few dinners mixed in. Dinner was good food, tequila and lots of live music. Well the mariachi band would always come out at the end and play until we got tired. That's how mariachi is done. My roommate in medical school was from Pakistan. We were the two gringos on the block that never knew the words to sing along with the Mariachi. After a few of those dinners, and a few Mexican Independence Day celebrations, I got tired of being on the outside.

In Mexico City, literally leaning on the walls of the Palacio Nacional, there used to be scores of pirated CD vendors. They've since moved on to the gigantic tinaguis known as Tepito, the Mexican version of Mercado Oriental (only a whole lot bigger). You could pick up a CD there for 5 pesos (about $0.75 USD at the time). I bought all the Vicente Fernandez and Jose Alfredo Jimenez CDs I could get my hands on. I was determined to sing along at the next Noche Mexicana (any gathering that follows the traditional pattern of tacos, tequila and mariachi).

When I flew back to TJ, the lone black guy with a single carry-on (my preferred mode of travel) obviously attracted the attention of the Policia Federal. They pulled me aside and asked the usual questions. What can I say, I fit a profile in that part of the world. They started dissecting my little roller-wheel carry-on, looking for secret compartments, a very thorough check. The only thing they had on me was the 30 pirated CDs in my luggage.

"Y estos? Son de pirata," he told me.

"5 pesos en el Zócalo," I responded. "A really good price."

"Yeah, but they're pirated. Más que 5 se considera piratería," he responded.

"How can that be?" I asked sheepishly. Sheepish gringo is the way to go with Federales. "I bought them right in front of the Palacio Nacional."

He started looking through the titles. Nothing but old school mariachi and one new one by Vicente's son, Alejandro, who isn't too shabby either.

"Y porque puro mariachi?"

"Because independence day is a month away and I want to sing along this time," was my response. "I'm tired of not knowing the songs."

He laughed. He called over his supervisor and told him what I had said. He laughed as well. No fine. No mordida. Nothing confiscated.

I've been singing those songs ever since.

Last Friday Chilo asked for me to check.. Only Floors ($258) and first row of bleachers ($208) were available... Every $50, $108 and $158 was gone. But said to check back later..

Checked Saturday.. Still Gone.

Checked Tuesday.. Concert delayed.. Check back for details Refunds after Dec 8.

So as of today no resched.. Maybe the procastination paid off and I will not have to foot the bill for a $200 ticket... The problem always was that none of the extended family participants (3 was the last count) was not able to come up with the coin for the admission..

We'll see what happens with the revised date if there is one..

Vicente fernandez is worth every penny, if he has tequila to drink he sing all night long. saw him in tijuana 4 hours concert ended up singing for almost 7 hours saw him in san diego front seat worth it you will have a good time.
