Thread: Learn something every day :)

    Default Learn something every day :)

    I was listening to a few ladies talk about some co-workers of theirs, and they kept referring to them as ¨Tortilleras, now I knew they didn´t work in a Tortilla shack so I had to ask what they were referring to since it was over my head.

    Tortilleras = Lesbians

    Tortillera
    Pájara
    Marimacha
    Trola
    Cundanga
    Manflor
    Pata

    As a lesbian myself (trapped in a man's body), I find all these terms highly offensive.

    It is also implied in a sarcastic tone of saying "she makes tortillas" (in Spanish of course) with a wink and the patting of the hand like how tortilla is made and a nod in the general direction of the aledged Tortilleras..

    Glad you brought that up! I was going to post something under "Nica culture" about this habit of Nicas! I don't know if it is practiced all over Nicaragua but in the southwest you seldom see people point with their finger when you ask them directions or about another person. It is often a combination of a head nod and lip purse but when they don't want the person they are talking about to see that they are pointing at them, it is always just the lips.
    Another odd (for us gringos anyway) cultural habit is how people wave to you to come over to them. They wave in the same manner that a gringo would wave to tell you to leave. It was all very confusing to me at first when I would see someone across the street and give them a short "gringo" wave and they would gesture with their hand as if to tell me to go away, when they were actually signaling to come over to them. I wish I had a video of it for those who have never seen it.
    Of course, as with everything, after awhile I now do it myself. Even with people here in the States at times.

    Or more explicitly, one hand is depicting "a hand" and the other hand (The supposid Tortilla) is a representation of
