    Default Lye!

I have the daunting task of refurbishing an antique baby bed for some friends of mine and their February baby! It's got years of paint/varnish on it and 46 lathe turned spindles. I've decided the best way to strip it would be in a lye bath. What is lye called in Spanish and where can I find it here in Granada? I don't want to buy cans and cans of drain opener. There must be some place that sells the stuff for commercial use! While I'm asking.... I'm also going to need several gallons of white distilled vinegar. Any idea?
    Thanks, Bobby

Sorry, no ideas Bobby, but I would like to extend my condolences to you for this upcoming task you have. Sounds like pure H*LL!

Lye is sodium hydroxide (caustic soda), which Google tells me is hidróxido de sodio in Spanish. Try soda cáustica.

Now, if you ask 99.9% of gringos where to buy sodium hydroxide, caustic soda, or even lye, you'll get a blank stare, the same with asking Nicas about hidróxido de sodio, etc.

    Try quitapintura.

Lye is the active ingredient to process bio-diesel from organic oils..

If you can find a bio diesel group, you will find a lead on lye...

Funny I have been wondering about Lye for some time, wanted to make some real philly style pretzels, but I am to afraid to play with the lye and things I eat.

Philly pretzels... cold and hard with a ton of salt. The best ones have spent a week inside the corner pretzel cart before being bought! You have to dunk 'em in beer before you can chew 'em!!!!

Roger says to try the farmacia for the sodium hydroxide, as well as acetic acid (dehydrated vinegar), which will look like yellow salt. If this doesn't pan out, check drain cleaners in the food store with the highest percentage of sodium hydroxide.

I'd be interested to know if anyone knows how to homebrew lye. I've been trying to make biodiesel and lye is one of the three ingredients needed. No problem here getting the palm oil and ethanol, but lye is elusive. From what I understand, you can make it out of wood ash, but I can't find any good information on the process.

Lye - For Soda Cáustica, try the places that sell products to clean pools (it is used in Nicaragua to remove fungus in pools) or on a place that produces soap for industrial methods (if you live in Granada - call Jabonería Prego for referrals). Maybe the local pharmacy or hardware store can place a special order for you or indicate where you can find it.

Found it! Farmacia Merced here in Granada sells the stuff, 100% pure in liquid. They made my friends buy rubber gloves before they would sell it to him. I'll test it out in the next few days and let you know what happens!

Soda Caustica. The other names that were suggested are what most people refer to as paint stripper. A bit safer but a hell of alot more work.
