Default Boozing and Brawling: The Nicaraguan pursuit of Happiness

I've noticed that Nicas aren't dissimilar from Brits. Both like a good drink and a punch-up. Maybe I live in rough neighbourhood, but I've seen six street fights since I arrived four weeks ago.

So I just wanted to share a short-story about some of these things I've seen. I blogged it here:

    www.interamericana.co.uk/2009/12/boozing-bruising-brawling-and-bawling-dramas-on-calle-cuiscoma/

    Thanks,

Well, at least they're reasonably fair about it. Fighting in Nicaragua seems to happen with much more ceremony and dignity than in the UK, where it's not unusual for 5 teenagers to attack a passerby for no reason at all.

I would assume that this is proof of the right to carry does offer some security? Many in Nicaragua have a permit to carry, so caution as to whom one attacks, eh?

When I was first here if the police came around they would act as referees, and the loser would drop jail...... I kinda liked that....

Many of the fights I see here, at least with the young " gangstas", have the punks separated by 50 meters and throwing rocks.
That wouldn"t have cut it when I was growing up.

Nope, you're not,I used to fight just about everyday when in 6th grade at recess time(Recreo),sometimes I'd win, other times I would end up getting licked .

But... it was ALWAYS the same guys fighting, myself and a fellow student.

When you go to Ometepe and visit Altagracia have a walk about 2 KM to Taguizapa on the beach. Nica owned by a Nica who spent almost 20 years in the States and saved his money. Raw place that has many people on Saturday night.

If you appreciate drunk Nicas and loud music you will love this place. It's Carnal! A gringo is a rock star!

Anyway we got there during the day and spend 3 hours drinking. We took pity on 2 guys and shared our bottle of FDC. One guy got increasingly angry as his friend got just as passive as they consumed more and more alcohol. Anyway the angry guy leaped up from the chair and started beating his dozy friend. So I jump up and grab the angry drunk and held him down while 50 - 100 Nicaraguans are standing around in circle around this madness-some with digital cameras. The Owner came over with some other Nicas and took care of the situation. Many Nica first responders thought I was the aggressor but apparently this guy had a history of this before. The owner told me that it is very common for 2 Nicas that are 'friends' to enter a bar together and one wind up stabbed.

No police at all and everything was settled 'in house'.

Ohh they also have rooms for rent for $5.00!

    Luv that song!

    Trailers for sale or rent
    Rooms to let...fifty cents.
No phone, no pool, no pets
    I ain't got no cigarettes
Ah, but..two hours of pushin' broom
Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room
I'm a man of means by no means
    King of the road.

    Third boxcar, midnight train
    Destination...Bangor, Maine.
Old worn out suits and shoes,
I don't pay no union dues,
I smoke old stogies I have found
Short, but not too big around
I'm a man of means by no means
    King of the road.

I know every engineer on every train
All of their children, and all of their names
And every handout in every town
And every lock that ain't locked
    When no one's around.

    I sing,
    Trailers for sale or rent
    Rooms to let, fifty cents
No phone, no pool, no pets
    I ain't got no cigarettes
Ah, but, two hours of pushin' broom

This happened in 2007 and I have photos from that day. Not sure if same owner is there or if an upgrade has been done to the place. I heard that there has been an overhaul. The rooms were awful and I have some pictures as they were. The owner gave me a tour of the place and he speaks English and likes the USA and Gringos.

I may even have a photo of the 2 friends together taken before dark. Another thing I remember is the owner used a lot of ice in the 2 freezers he had-I guess for the common power outages.

So valuable was the real estate in these that whole guapote were stored with the bottles of beer together so every beer smelled like fish!

Great location right at the end of the road past many small fincas of plantains and breadfruit.

Heysus Christy you give such a true graphic discription.....

I stayed in Granada in about 1992 in a 1 dollar a night place doing a job for World Relief Fund....

There was not any better place to stay in them days.....

Some people just have no idea how bad this place was destroyed.....

I hope it doesn't comeback to that.....
