Default Johann Gutenburg never had these problems

I recently bought a Sony Touch e-reader. It's a very nicely designed unit, crafted in flat black metal for a masculine, testosterone-laden feel. It's simple, it works well.

However, I've had two failures in less than a month. Both happened when I was recharging it. Oh, by the way, Sony doesn't think you'd ever want to plug it into a wall outlet to recharge it so they didn't include a wall charger. But one is available online for $30 plus shipping. Gee, thanks Sony. The unit is charged via USB cable.

Well, when I unpacked it and plugged it in, all was well. It installed software on my computer so I could download books via PC and transfer to the reader. Then, when the battery got low I plugged in the USB cable, and nothing happened. My PC said, "USB device not recognized," and grumbled something about drivers, which were there.

Sony Chat had me perform a hard reset, which deleted the books I'd installed. Nice going. It solved the problem, but it was strike one. I was already thinking about Kindles.

The second time I had to recharge it, the same thing happened. Strike two. The following is the actual transcript of my chat session.

    eSupport Chat Transcript
Katrina_ > Hi John. Welcome to Sony Online Support. I'm Katrina. Please allow me a moment to review your concern.
Katrina_ > Thanks for waiting, John. I am sorry that the Reader is not charging. I'll be glad to assist you with this.
Katrina_ > When did this issue first start occurring?
John> The first time I recharged it after buying it. I used this chat feature, and was advised to reset the device. That fixed the problem, but now it's doing it again
Katrina_ > Please connect the Reader in a different USB port and check if the issue still persist.
John > yes, my PC still says USB device not recognized.
Katrina_ > Please stay online while I check this information for you.
Katrina_ > Is the red light on the Reader ON?
    John > no
Katrina_ > Can you view a USB symbol and a "Do Not Disconnect" message on the screen of the Reader?
John > there is a USB symbol, and at the bottom of the Reader screen is says USB connected, but no other message
Katrina_ > Thanks for the information.
Katrina_ > Please disconnect the Reader from the Computer now.
    John > its' disconnected
Katrina_ > Now, please please perform the Soft Reset procedure by pressing the Reset button located at the rear of the Reader with the help of a small pin.
John > i will lose all my books again, no?
Katrina_ > No, John. "Soft Reset" procedure will not delete the eBooks from the Reader.
John > I'm pushing it with the stylus, and nothing happens.
Katrina_ > Please hold the Reset button for three seconds and then release it.
John > Ok, I did that.
Katrina_ > Now, please check if the issue is resolved.
John > It seems to be working now, but surely I don't have to reset it every time I have to charge it?
Katrina_ > If the issue occurs again, please follow the same procedure to resolve the issue.
John > I'm sorry, but if I have to reset it every time I charge it, I'm going to throw it away and buy a Kindle.
Katrina_ > Soft Reset won't harm the Reader.
John > No, but why should I have to reset it at all?
Katrina_ > However, I hope that this issue will not occur in the near future.
John > This is twice, if it occurs a third time, I'm sending it in under Warranty.
Katrina_ > If the issue occurs again, you can send it Sony Factory Service Centre to get this issue resolve under warranty.
Katrina_ > Are you able to take it from here
Katrina_ > I am sorry for the typo.
John > Yes, thank you for your help, I feel better that I've gotten it to work for now.
    Katrina_ > You're welcome.
Katrina_ > Good Bye and thank you for contacting Sony Online Support.

Wall charger? Haven't seen one of those in ages! The only thing that doesn't plug into a USB port anymore is my refrigerator (which is good, because if the cord were any easier to get to my housekeeper would unplug it every night!).

Thanks for convincing me to get the kindle. So many e-readers on the market these days, it's probably better to stick with the tried and true model.

Make sure it's a model with international book-purchase options.

    Sssshhhhh....

Apple products are perfect. Claiming they have "issues" is like denying global warming. You are branded a heretic. (My wife is on her second iPhone and it has "issues" too.)

    Big disappointment, Jonh.

My wife has a Kindle, so I know all about them. The Sony really isn't so bad, it's like the house with the leaky roof, it's only a problem when it rains.

I found what I hope to be the Sony's savior: http://calibre-ebook.com/

It's an open source program that works with a lot of different E-readers, including mine. The interface seems to be infinitely better so far, and it converts file formats. Including Kindle. As long as you are able to remove the Kindle DRM, that is. There are ways to do that, but I haven't tried it yet. So I can finish reading the book I bought on my wife's Kindle by converting from .AZW to .EPUB (in theory...)

I even found some W. E. Johns Biggles books that I downloaded, converted, and can read on the Sony.
