This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens to the possibility of violence in connection with regional elections to be held on Sunday, March 7, in Nicaragua’s North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN) and the South Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAS). These elections will determine membership on the regional councils of the RAAN and the RAAS.

Protests and demonstrations are likely before and after the elections, particularly at or near municipal buildings. We remind U.S. citizens that even events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. U.S. citizens are therefore urged to exercise caution if visiting Nicaragua’s Atlantic Coast and to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations. U.S. citizens should stay current with media coverage of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times.
