As soon as President Daniel Ortega spoke of his support to Iran's government in relation to their programs of the enrichment of uranium, The US Ambassador to Nicaragua, Paul Trivelli, said that Nicaragua has all the rights to have relations with any country they feel is necessary. BUT Nicaragua should pay attention to that passed by the United Nations in concerns to Iran or any other country.

The Security Council of the United Nations had 23 votes, none of which were in accord with the uranium enrichment program of Iran.

Trivelli was asked if Nicaragua maintained relations with Iran would this affect the relations with the United States. He responded that he would prefer not to think of Hypothetical things and said that the United States has its own discussion with Iran.
